6 Eco-Friendly Christmas Ideas That Is Also Budget Friendly
Cost cutting ways to celebrate the big day!
Are you expecting guests coming over for Christmas? With just a few weeks away, there’s still time to get your house ready and beautiful for your annual Christmas dinner. It’s also the year that you can embrace eco-friendly ideas to reduce your environmental impact and spread the joy of sustainability.
Here are six eco-friendly Christmas options that won’t break the bank:
1. DIY Decorations And Reuse Old Gift Wrap:
Create personalized and eco-friendly decorations using recycled materials. Turn old magazines into paper ornaments, repurpose glass jars into candle holders and grab some fallen branches to make a festive wreath.
My hubby created a gorgeous wreath from fallen branches one year.
You can also reused old gift wrap to package up your gifts. I also keep old gift bags and they come in all sizes and are perfect for packaging your gift items.
You can also collect pine cones, or springs of holly as decorations.
2. Sustainable Gifts:
Choose gifts that align with sustainability, such as reusable items or products made from recycled materials. Consider gifting a reusable water bottle, bamboo utensils, or a tote bag.
Ebooks are a great gift idea. Most devices are equipped for downloads, and. purchasing an eBook gift card makes a sustainable gift item.
Consider gifting tickets to a concert, a cooking class, or even a gym membership.
Another idea is to purchase potted plants to add to add more green decor to a person’s home.
3.Energy-Efficient Lighting:
Illuminate your home with LED lights, which consume less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Solar-powered outdoor lights are another eco-friendly option. This not only reduces your carbon footprint but also trims down electricity costs during the festive season.
4.Zero-Waste Meals:
Plan a Christmas feast that minimizes food waste. Purchase locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to support local farmers and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Additionally, encourage guests to bring their reusable containers to take home leftovers.
Find great ways to reuse leftovers. Turn turkey meat into turkey sandwiches and reuse turkey meat and bones and make a hearty turkey soup.
One of my favorite annual soup recipes is Turkey Congee Soup, which is a Chinese dish using leftover turkey.
Here is a version:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup jasmine rice
- 8 cups chicken or turkey broth
- 2 cups shredded cooked turkey
- 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
- 1 cup of celery
- 1 cup of carrots
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Rinse and Cook Rice: Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear. In a large pot, combine the rice or turkey broth. (optional) Add chopped carrots and chopped celery. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until the rice is soft and the mixture thickens, stirring occasionally. (if you have any turkey bones, or left over turkey parts, put them here).
2. Add Turkey: Once the rice is cooked, add more shredded turkey to the congee. Stir well to combine. Add more water if necessary to make it like a soup.
3. Add the sliced ginger and minced garlic to the congee.
Season: Stir in soy sauce and season with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning as needed.
Feel free to customize this recipe by adding your favorite toppings like a soft-boiled egg, crispy shallots, or a drizzle of chili oil. In the past, I make this soup using turkey bones, and once soup is made, I scoop the bones out. There are lots of meat that comes off the bones during the cooking process and it makes the soup more flavorful. You’ll probably need a large soup pot.
5.Homemade Treats
Consider gifting a box of hand-made chocolates, or brownies. Making cookies is also fun, and you can package them in reuseable containers or jars.
Christmas gift-giving doesn’t have to break the bank!
6. Charitable Donation
Gift the gift of love to a charity in someone’s name who may have passed on. If this person loved to help children overseas, consider this a worthy gift that lasts.
Some charities include:
World Vision, Unicef, The Red Cross, or a charity of your choice.
Many organizations also provide you with a tax receipt.
That’s all today.
