When people implement a PKM, they tend to simply implement concepts they are not necessarily fans of, and force themselves to use them. That’s not effective, it’s best to use what you need, the way you need it.

This problem is very common with daily notes. Many people use them, but few know why. I will try to explain how to make these notes useful.

1. Retrospective View

Since daily notes are associated with a date, they allow you to know when you did something, or to look back on an aspect of your life. In short, they give context to your actions.

It allows you to easily review what you have done. This can be useful, for example, in a personal development or improvement process, if you want to look back on your mistakes or on the points in your life that you want to improve.

It can also help you understand your life better. For example, if you indicate your mood in your daily notes, and you notice over a large period of time that Monday is the day you are the least happy, you can try to understand why, allowing you to try to solve the problem.

This is intrinsically linked to journaling, which I recommend you practice because it allows you to express your thoughts and to have material to do this retrospective review.

2. Planning

Daily notes can be used to plan what you want to do in your day. If you plan your days, you can be pretty sure that they are going to be productive because just writing down your tasks or goals motivates you to do them, and also allows you to avoid finding yourself at some point in the day not knowing what to do, and therefore doing something not necessarily useful.

There are many ways to plan your day through daily notes. Personally, I like to create the daily note the day before so I can plan my tasks the day before rather than the day of, but it is also possible to plan your tasks in the morning or throughout the day.

3. Capture

Daily notes can be seen as the only entry point for everything happening during the day.

Then, if you want to find the things you’ve captured to know whether you should process them or not, you can be sure to find them in only one place.

Final Note

It is these 3 concepts that make daily notes useful for me. The trick is to find what works for you. Maybe you don’t like to plan your day in your daily notes, but instead like to do something else?

I don’t know, but the best way to make your daily notes useful is to use them without being forced to, in a way that suits you and is useful to you.

Now for the ways to implement daily notes, there are many.

I personally use Obsidian for just about everything, so I implemented my daily notes in it. Others will prefer Roam Research, others a paper journal, etc… Again, it’s up to you to find what works for you!
