Lyons Magnus, LLC, has voluntarily recalled not one, not two, not three, but 53 nutritional and beverage products.

The reason, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement, is potential contamination with microbes such as Cronobacter sakazakii.

The recall includes certain beverages, liquid coffee, pediatric nutritional supplements, protein shakes, nutritional shakes, and thickened liquids. Products included in the recall include some branded as Oatly, Stumptown, Glucerna, Intelligentsia, Aloha, Kate Farms, and Premier Protein.

Reason for the recall

Apparently, analyses found that the Lyons Magnus products “did not meet commercial sterility specifications,” in the words of the FDA. This was a fancy way of saying that things were not clean enough to ensure that no bad bacteria got into the products.

Cronobacter

Cronobacter is a bacteria that can be found in dry goods and sewer water, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Infection. Infection can be particularly dangerous in infants, people over 65, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, meningitis, and seizures in infants.

Food contaminated with Cronobacter may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Although Cronobacter Is not commonly linked to human illness, it can cause severe or fatal infections in rare cases.

Cronobacter can cause rare bloodstream and central nervous system infections and has been associated with severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis) and blood poisoning (sepsis), especially in newborns.

Anyone who has a recalled product in his or her possession should dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers in all time zones with questions may contact the Lyons Recall Support Center 24/7 at 1–800–627–0557, or visit its website at www.lyonsmagnus.com. This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
