5 Tricks for Drinking Two Litres of Water in a Day
Your body will be grateful
Water is life. Nothing new here. What is too often overlooked is the major role played by hydration in our well-being, energy level, and weight control.
Our body is 60% water. Water is used in our cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate our temperature and maintain our bodily functions:
“You know how it feels when your eyes, nose, or mouth gets dry? Keeping your body hydrated helps it retain optimum levels of moisture in these sensitive areas, as well as in the blood, bones, and the brain. In addition, water helps protect the spinal cord, and it acts as a lubricant and cushion for your joints.” — Everyday Health
Drinking enough water in a day is crucial. But not always easy.
I’ve been a small drinker too — less than 1 liter a day. As I started paying attention to my overall well-being, I decided to take charge of this aspect. Now, I drink a little more than 2 liters a day.
Here’s my secret recipe.
#1: Buy a reusable bottle
This is my #1 tip. It’s life-changing.
I always carry around a 1-liter reusable bottle, bought from 24bottles (this is not an affiliate link). I’ve been very satisfied with my purchase, as the bottle is big enough, resistant, but still very light-weight.
I use it all day long. I fill it in the morning before leaving home and refuel it as often as I can. I also use it when I stay home: it is currently next to my computer. At night, it is still by my side.
Using a reusable bottle is also much more environmentally friendly than plastic bottles. No excuses.
#2: A morning routine
The very first thing I do in the morning is drinking a huge glass of water. It wakes my stomach up, as well as my metabolism, and helps me feel energized. It’s my morning fuel.
“One of the biggest indicators of lethargy or low energy is that you are dehydrated. Because water aids in both body regulation and brain function, it is also closely related to balancing out our moods.” — Rania Batayneh, nutritionist and author
#3: Set reminders
It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of everyday life and forget simple things like that, especially if you’re not used to drinking a lot. Over time, your body will get used to receiving more water, and you’ll get thirsty more often. It will be a natural reminder to drink more frequently.
But in the meantime, setting reminders can be an effective solution.
Whether on your phone or computer, set an alarm every hour to remind you to drink a glass of water. And do it.
#4: Drink before and after each meal
Sometimes, you may mistake feelings of thirst for hunger. Drinking a glass of water before each meal can help you discern whether you are feeling true hunger or not. One hour after a meal, it helps digestion. Jacqueline Schaffer, M.D., and author explains:
“Drinking an 8-ounce glass of water before a meal may help aid digestion, while drinking water an hour after you consume your meal may help the body absorb the micronutrients.”
It’s a trick to lose weight if you need to, but it’s also a way to realign the amount of food you eat with your appetite.
However, it is not recommended to drink during your meals. Water dilutes the digestive juices being released for digestion, which hinders them from breaking down food (source: Healthline.com).
#5: Flavor your water
Yeah, I know. Water has no taste. It can be a little boring.
Add flavor by putting some sliced fruits, lemon or mint leaves in a jar filled with water. Let it brew for a few hours in the refrigerator. Then, enjoy delicately flavored water!
