How to Eat Healthy on a Busy Schedule
A short survival-guide for modern human beings
It seems to be a common problem. Many of my friends keep buying ready-meals or eat pasta almost every day. Others break the bank in ordering food every other night. Between school, work and all the things that the modern human has to deal with, no one actually has time to do proper groceries, neither cooking balanced meals every single day.
Here are the simple tips that I found out while experiencing different solutions over the past few years. I hope they might help you, as eating healthy seems to be a non-negligible part of living a fulfilling life.
Use deep-frozen vegetables to your advantage
Often reasonably affordable, easy to find, and easy to cook, deep-frozen vegetables are very practical. If you’re lucky enough to have a large freezer, stack a pile of them each month and get creative! It’s often not difficult to transform them into tasty meals. Associate them with a few spices, a bit of cream, or onions. Compose a plate with two-thirds of them and one-third of whole grains, and you’re all set!
Cook for several days
When you find time and motivation to cook a delicious meal, don’t just do one or two servings of it. Cook a whole kettle and divide it into several plates. Keep one or two in the fridge for the following days, and put the rest in the freezer. You’ll be glad to find them the day you’ll have no time to cook. Just make sure that you use hermetic boxes, or at least put some stretch film to protect your food.
Get fruits and vegetables delivered to your door
I did it for a few months last year. Every Thursday I went to my local relay point to get my weekly fruit and vegetable box (in fact it was a basket, nevermind). It wasn’t that expensive, the fruits and veggies were from local farms, and they were really good. I didn’t have to go to the market anymore, neither figuring out what I wanted to buy. I just had to find ways to cook them.
It’s a good way to discover new tastes because you often don’t get to choose what you get. Moreover, for fruits and veggies averses, you’ll don’t want to lose them, so you’ll find ways to eat them instead of indulging in processed or empty calorie food. You’ll then be too full to rush to the cake cupboard!
Get an overall routine
This one might be a bit more controversial, as many people don’t like eating frequently similar meals. As far as I’m concerned, I prefer having an overall routine but eating healthy, instead of trying to bring too much variety and losing too much time, or ending up having an unhealthy diet. I don’t eat every day the same food, of course, but I somewhat eat the same kind of meals most of the time. Breakfast is always a fruit, plus soya yogurt with muesli, lunch is for vegetables and carbs, and dinner is for soup or salads. Thanks to this, my grocery list is structured, and I don’t have to spend to much time finding out what I can and want to eat.
