5 Things you Need to Know About STEPN (GMT, GST)

Move & Earn, GST/GMT Tokens, STEPN Application, Sneakers, Gems, Badges, and More!

STEPN is a Web3 lifestyle app with Social-Fi and Game-Fi elements. Users equipped with NFT Sneakers — walk, jog or run outdoors to earn tokens and NFTs. STEPN has a dual-token system (GST, GMT).

In this story, I am going to explain 5 things you better know about this project. For more info, you can also check the official documentation of the project here.

#1 — Move & Earn Requisites

You can earn in-game currency (GST) By walking, jogging, or running outdoors. To do so, there are some steps involved:

  1. Download the STEPN application (iOS, Android)
  2. Sign-up using your email address
  3. Create a wallet inside the application
  4. Buy NFT Sneakers from the Marketplace
  5. Move & Earn

Remember that for buying NFT Sneakers, you need to pay the fee with SOL. Therefore, once your wallet is created, you need to transfer some SOL to it.

After purchasing the Sneakers, the energy level will climb at a rate of 25% every 6 hours (Fixed at AEDT Time 00:00, 06:00, 12:00, 18:00). You can start to move and earn after the first 25% energy restoration.

#2 — Game Modes

STEPN will eventually have 3 game modes:

  1. Solo Mode: users are equipped with NFT Sneakers and earn tokens (GST/GMT) by moving. Energy is needed to earn these tokens. Every 1 Energy equals 5 minutes of Move & Earn movement. Rewards will be paid out for every minute of movement and are dependent on factors such as type of sneaker, sneaker’s efficiency and comfort attributes, and movement speed.
  2. Marathon Mode: users will complete weekly or monthly Marathons (e.g. 5km, 10km, 15km) tasks and earn tokens. Users need to register for these events and they need to lock a small registration fee. This fee will be refunded once they finish the task. If not, these fees will be pooled together and used for leaderboard rewards.
  3. Background Mode: users will earn passive income without actively using the app. In this mode, they hold a Sneaker in the app, and when they walk, the steps will be counted directly from the mobile device’s Health Data app. Based on the amount of activity, some reward tokens then will be sent to the user’s wallet.

Right now, the Solo Mode is live and the STEPN team is planning to release Marathon and Background Modes in the near future.

#3 — Sneakers

Sneakers are NFTs needed to play STEPN game (walk, run) and earn rewards (in GST/GMN).

Sneakers have different attributes such as:

  • Efficiency: plays a part in GST earnings
  • Luck: determines the frequency and quality of a Mystery Box drop.
  • Comfort
  • Resilience: affects the decay rate of Durability.

At the moment, there are four different types of Sneakers as below.

Each Sneaker type is designed to suit a different exercise intensity and/or fitness level.

There are also five Sneaker qualities, as below.

When a Sneaker is minted, the value of each Attribute will be chosen at random within the min. and max.

To level up Sneakers, users can burn GST tokens. There are also some mechanisms to burn GST/GMT and reset the Sneakers’ attributes.

#4 — Gems, and Badges

Gems and Badges are two in-game features that help players to progress faster.

To enhance Sneakers' attributes, users can use Gems. There are four types of Gems, with each Gem representing an Attribute:

  • Yellow: Efficiency
  • Blue: Luck
  • Red: Comfort
  • Purple: Resilience

By burning GST/GMT, users can also upgrade their Gems.

Badges offer in-game perks and are earned by completing tasks. Here are some of those perks:

  • Extra Energy in Solo Mode Gameplay.
  • Leaderboard point bonus in Marathon Mode Gameplay.
  • Higher chance of leasing out Sneaker (Shoe-Minting).
  • Lower Minting cost.
  • Governance.
