I noticed that quite a few new writers struggle to find things to write about. And I get it because I used to be staring at that blank screen! That’s why I explained how I got a huge list of ideas in one of my recent articles:

But this time, I’m going to be a bit more specific and give you 5 things everyone can write about. To avoid a 10 or 15 minute read and scare people away, I’ll write 5 articles, each about 1 main topic.

I hope this will help get the creative juices flowing!

So today, let’s have a look at our first topic.

Family and relationships

Everyone has a family member (whether they’re a blood relative or not), and relationships with several people. I’m talking about friends, loved ones, neighbours, colleagues… But of course, you could also read that as a polyamorous relationship (that would be an interesting topic!).

So why not share something about one of these relationships?

You might be thinking: ‘But who would want to read about my quarrel with a colleague?

Maybe nobody does. Even though I think many would be interested since it’s like a reality show that people tend to love.

But what if nobody reads it? Does that really matter? No, it doesn’t! And you shouldn’t feel disappointed. After all, you sat down, wrote something personal, maybe did a lot of editing and thinking about synonyms and how to phrase things… So you gained experience!

The types of articles you could write

A personal essay is a great thing to start with. It teaches you how to put your thoughts and feelings on paper.

But of course, your article could also be informative. I’d love to read about the wedding traditions in your country/culture/religion for example. Or why not analyse the challenges and joys of blended families?

It doesn’t have to be about your personal life.

As to the length of your story, don’t even bother looking at the word count. Whether you write a short-form story of 150 words or an essay of 2000, the most important thing is that you start writing and enjoy the process.

Some specific ideas

You might have been writing down some ideas while reading this. But just in case you’re still having trouble finding a good topic, I made a list of some nice topics/titles.

  • Do you think you’ll be able to have a long-distance relationship?
  • How I keep the spark alive in my relationship
  • Marriage in the 21st century vs. the 20th century — A big evolution
  • My adoption story
  • I don’t know how to make friends at 40 years old
  • Sibling rivalry — How my siblings ruined my life
  • How did you cope with the loss of a loved one?

If you use one of these ideas to write an article, feel free to link to this article / tag me. I’ll be happy to read it!
