World obesity levels have tripled since the 70s. We now live in a world where fast food is available more than ever before. Convenience is everything to us these days. This includes driving everywhere, not doing much exercise, and being generally laid back about our lifestyle habits.

Because of the way that we live our lives more people than ever want to lose weight through diet or exercise. If you have ever tried to lose weight, then you will know that it takes work and discipline. There’s nothing more frustrating than working hard to lose weight and not seeing the results that you want.

There are some people that lose a little weight at the start of dieting and then find themselves unable to lose anymore. There are other people that don’t lose anything at all, even though they put the effort in. Either way, it’s not a nice situation to be in.

If any of these situations arise, then it is important to try to establish the root cause of being unable to lose weight. The good news is that the things that I am about to mention can help if your goal is to lose weight.

1. Lack of Sleep

You will be amazed at how sleep relates to weight loss. Not getting enough sleep can make you hungrier throughout the day. This is because not getting enough sleep affects the way that the body functions.

I am somebody who substitutes sleep for food, so I have first-hand experience of this. Each time I have less sleep, I eat more to gain energy and stop myself from being tired.

Lack of sleep slows down the metabolism, making it harder to burn fat. It is recommended that adults get a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night. People that are aged 61 to 64 years old should be getting up to nine hours of sleep every night.

If you’re like me and enjoy sleeping, you now have an excuse to sleep more.

2. Hormone Imbalance

Hormones are chemicals that are released into the bloodstream. If your hormones are imbalanced, it can cause a range of symptoms including weight gain.

An underactive thyroid is caused by the thyroid gland not producing enough thyroid hormones. Not getting enough of this hormone affects metabolism, making it harder to burn off calories.

Low estrogen levels are another factor that can affect weight. Not having enough estrogen can increase leptin levels, which triggers hunger.

Signs that you may have a hormone imbalance include itchy skin, mood swings, and headaches. If you think your hormones are imbalanced, a doctor can help you regulate them.

3. Your Medications

Certain medications can cause weight gain. Anti-depressants, diabetes drugs and, blood pressure medication are some of the meds that can cause weight gain.

Medications can affect metabolism and alter your appetite. Research has shown that some medications can increase water retention, which can also increase weight. There is also the possibility that taking some medications can make you lethargic and less able to lead an active life.

If you think that your medication may have caused weight gain, it can be discussed with your doctor. They may be able to put you on a different medication. You can also try eating more protein because this will keep you fuller for longer.

4. Past Trauma

Any type of past trauma can have an impact in ways that you may not have thought possible.

According to experts, the younger somebody is when they experience trauma in particular sexual abuse is the more likely they are to have excess weight in later life. Research has found that some people deliberately gain weight to make themselves less attractive. Others binge eat for comfort.

Those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are also more likely to be overweight, although research has been unable to determine if the two are linked.

For anybody that thinks that past trauma may be affecting them, it is important to seek professional help to get this resolved.

5. Quitting Smoking

Although quitting smoking is a positive thing, it can cause weight gain. One reason for this is that you feel hungrier in the first few weeks of quitting. Many people that quit smoking substitute it by eating more.

It may also be because an ex-smoker needs to find something else to replace the hand-to-mouth action.

Researchers at the Kyoto Medical Centre have found that the heavier a person used to smoke, the more weight they are likely to gain.

Arranging an eating and exercise program at the same time as quitting smoking can reduce weight gain.

Final Thoughts

Although it is easier to gain weight in this day and age, there are a lot of things that can reduce weight gain.

Exercise and diet are important in controlling weight, but there are a lot more things that can cause weight gain. Each person’s body is unique, and it is important to find out what is personally affecting your weight.

If you have tried the conventional diet and exercise to lose weight and it has not worked, then it may be time to get medical advice.
