This is the title of the paper publishing the results of a study conducted by a team of researchers led by Gordon G. Gallup of the Department of Psychology at the University at Albany.

This involved examining characteristics that are not immediately associated with sexual satisfaction but are much more indicators of a good partner in general.

During the study, 54 female undergraduate students, who were in a committed relationship with a male had to answer questions on the following concerns:

• The participant’s sexual behavior
• Their prior sexual experience
• The participant’s feelings toward their committed partner
• Various physical and psychological features of their committed partner

The factors that enhance sexual satisfaction

Interestingly, the following 5 factors were found to have a major impact on how much women enjoy sex with their partners:

Her partner’s attractiveness

Women who find their partner very attractive are more sexually satisfied.

So far, probably not a big surprise.

Since overall attractiveness is a predictor of health and thus good genes, this is consistent with the researcher’s hypothesis that the female orgasm could be a kind of feedback mechanism regarding the “quality” of the partner from an evolutionary point of view.

The study found that a man’s attractiveness has a very strong effect on his partner’s orgasm intensity, orgasm frequency, and overall sexual satisfaction.

Self-confidence

They say confidence is sexy.

The study confirms that this is true, at least for men.

Confident partners resulted in participants reporting more frequent orgasms.

Shoulder width

The v-shaped upper body, characterized by broad shoulders and a narrow hip is considered the beauty ideal of men. Rightly so, as the researchers discovered.

The study found that broad-shouldered men cause greater sexual satisfaction in their partners.

Income

Having money is sexy. The study also seems to confirm this.

Since women often depended on the support of men to raise their offspring, it makes sense that evolution has developed a preference for men with resources.

According to the study, the partner’s income is positively correlated with the woman’s frequency.

Protection by partner

A man who makes a woman feel safe is hot.

The study found that a man’s protection is the second best predictor of his partner’s sexual satisfaction after his attractiveness.

Orgasms As Feedback

The results show that female orgasm may indeed be a feedback mechanism for mate choice. Good genes, resources, a partner who can protect his wife, physical strength, and confidence are certainly qualities that are beneficial for raising healthy offspring, which is why female preferences for these traits have evolved over the course of evolution.

As the study shows, these preferences are very clearly expressed during sex.

The researchers explain this evolutionary view as follows:

Among sexually reproducing species, each parent contributes a random sample of only half of their genes to their offspring. As a consequence, both parents have a vested interest in the other 50 percent of each child’s genes. Mate choice is not a trivial issue. One of the best ways to ensure that genes find their way into subsequent generations is to pair them with a member of the opposite sex who is healthy, reproductively viable, and has high quality genes. Growing evidence clearly shows that features people find attractive in members of the opposite sex function as indicators of good genes and act as signals for health and fertility (for a review, see Gallup and Frederick, 2010). Because the costs of reproduction are higher for females, particularly human females, selection for making judicious mate choices would be expected to have had a greater impact on women.
