However, you may ask now, “but most of us live in peace”, and this is where these sinister characters from our history come in.

Not only these people wreaked havoc in any place they went or conquered they advocated crime to a level that no one else could fathom.

1. Adolf Hitler

Topping our list is none other than Adolf, the totalitarian Hitler, a German dictator single-handedly responsible for the death of more than six million Jews and other minorities during the period of the Holocaust.

After the Nazi party came into power, the Führer of Nazi Germany quickly rose to power during the 1930s.

Being evil to the core, he started to build up a narrative against the Jews and approached with striking fear into his own people.

All his policies were made around fear and anti-Semitism, which quivered with Germans after the first world war.

One might think killing more than six million humans would have quenched his thirst for blood, but sadly it didn’t.

After gaining control over everything in the country in September of 1939, Adolf Hitler started the second World War by invading Poland, and for six following years, he and his armies laid waste to Europe.

Hitler can easily be held responsible for 50 million deaths that occurred during World War II; however, like everything in the universe has to come to an end, so did Adolf Hitler and what a cowardly death it was.

Hitler committed suicide by shooting himself after killing his wife while they were in the Führerbunker on the 30th of April, 1945.

2. Leopold II Of Belgium

Leopold the second is commonly known for his role in establishing Belgium as the colonial power in Africa.

However, what most don’t talk about is the atrocities and oppression that he inflicted under his barbaric regime in Congo.

Every unspeakable oppression happened during his rule of almost 25 years. Leopold II’s army had all of Congo’s free state under their control, and every local man usually had one job only, which was to collect rubber.

Women and children were separated from men to be raped and tortured, and in the case of children, they were often cannibalised.

No words can describe the horrors that took place in those 25 years of atrocity and oppression.

With over 10 million people killed, this is one of the worst cases of barbarism in modern history, often known as the hidden Holocaust.

3. Pol Pot

Pol, the infamous Pot responsible for killing over 1.5 million people, and according to some recent studies, the count exceeds the 3 million mark.

This genocidal beast started killing and committing every known atrocity known to mankind.

Doctors, engineers, teachers, civil servants, and every other resident was stripped of their possession and forced to toil in the field under the new law.

Anyone who complained or opposed the changes the regime was making was admitted to special detention camps like the infamous S-21 camp.

Millions of skeletons were found in these kinds of camps, where people were starved to death.

Massive graves had to be dug to bury the bodies that were piling up by thousands because of uncountable death.

Pol Pot controlled every aspect of the life of an individual during his reign. No one could own money, property, jewelry or any other valuables.

This didn’t end there; no one could practice their religion or even own a book. As for the children, they were taken away from their parents as soon as they were born and raised as state property.

The insanity of Pol was such that he was told to change the symmetry of rice fields so that from the air, the fields looked more like a chess board.

4. Vlad The Impaler

Vlad the Impaler was famous not only in Romania but all over the world for the path he forged with blood in Europe during the 14th century.

Vlad was also the inspiration for the famous Bram Stoker’s character of Dracula. Vlad was a murderous and really cruel and violent man; he got his grip on power thrice between 1448 to 1462.

He was known for having no mercy at all for his enemies, and the way he liked treating his enemies was with impalement, therefore, getting his name the Impaler.

According to historians, Vlad killed between 80,000 to 100,000 people, among which he impaled more than 20,000.

His favorite was the one in which an individual would be impaled from behind until the stake would come out of his mouth.

The bodies impaled were left on the battlefield as a warning for future enemies.

Impalement was his favorite method of killing his foes; however, it was not the only one.

There are many stories related to Vlads methods of killing, some of which are boiling people alive in large cauldrons and impaling mothers along with their babies.

With so many horrendous acts written along with his name, the irony of ironies is he is still considered a hero and one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen.

5. Mao Zedong

Mao Zedong, premier of the Chinese communist party for over 27 years, left a real mark on the history of China.

Due to Chinese policies, not much is known about him, but he is often portrayed as a hero because of what he did to uplift the lives of the Chinese.

According to Chinese historians, he is the one who found The People’s Republic of China

However, this all changes when you read the story, which came out of China later after his rule ended. Mao had to deal with severe famine or perhaps the worst famine during his rule.

Persecution, execution and prison labor were common things during his rule, and the total number of people who died during his rule 27 years is 50 million.

Mao is still regarded as a hero because the Chinese believe it was he who took the country out of civil war and brought prosperity.

Made some serious reforms that would help the economy grow from nothing more than the fields of crops to mega-producer and manufacturer of goods.
