5-Minute TV Show Review: Space Force

8/10 — funny but a little bit slow at times

Synopsis/ idea: Michael Scott-like character in charge of a Space program pitted against a series of obstacles and challenges (or disasters). Comedy.

Why I started watching this show

I watched this in the early months of the pandemic and mostly just wanted a laugh. I wanted distraction as joy, and this show definitely delivered on that.

Three (3) reasons I recommended this show

[1] It both makes no sense and makes all the sense

Comedy as a craft can be so elusive and part of it is just how absurdity is used to evoke laughter and enjoyment. Space Force definitely exhibits this from ridiculous plot points to ridiculous visuals — like making all the space force staff wear ridiculously flamboyant designs with capes. I’d wear one, I will not lie. Would it be practical? No. But that’s the point!

[2] There’s a gorilla involved, and it has to be the best part of it all

This is a soft spoiler for Space Force but a crucial selling point that I’ve been sharing with all my friends. I LIVED for the scenes where they had to send a gorilla into space, and this gorilla becomes the central plotline to resolving some of the major obstacles and challenges that the space force team has to encounter.

[3] Makes you question relationships and how they’ve always been defined to you

This show also made me question beyond typical assumptions about relationships. In this story, the main protagonist’s wife asks for an open marriage and he has to navigate the awkward beginnings of seeking new relationships. It’s certainly a piece of ignorance on my part to always have focussed on how difficult it is to navigate the dating scene as a twenty-something with weirdos on dating apps to the absence of knowing the narratives of what new romance could look like at later ages in life.

One (1) thing I wish they did better

While Space Force had some solid zingers and great comedic narrative, I found that the 45-minute long episodes were a bit too long given the ratio of comedy. There were certainly dull moments that could have been cut out to quicken the pace, making for a 20-minute comedic show with fewer filler scenes.
