5 Important Lessons from My First Month on Medium.
But you can use my personal view on connections, reciprocity, and productizing work to accelerate your growth potential.
I am writing this while my first month on Medium is coming to an end.
In this short time, I have formed an opinion on what helped me so far and what can I can do better. Furthermore, my gratitude journal screams of being shared with the other new writers.
Moreover, before reviewing any further-related stats and plans, I wanted to share my takeaways while fresh, as more likely the positive thoughts I still have may vanish over time. What follows are a few lessons I learned.
Here are 5 valuable lessons and other side notes I put down during my journey so far:
- You can make more connections in one month on Medium than you can do in other places, in years. You need to use this opportunity! All you need to do is becoming interested in other people.
- Except for the Medium Partner monthly subscription, there is one more currency you should pay here: reciprocity.
- If you are not sure what to write about, just read. Even if you don’t have characters speaking to you just yet, reading helps you to hear plenty of amazing voices produced by thousands of writers. These voices will speak to you on a large variety of topics. Sooner or later your mind will be flooded with ideas.
- I am a firm believer that we work all in Sales, no matter the profession we’re in. Here on Medium, we sell our skills and time and, more importantly, we have to productize our work.
- It is imperative to have a plan, otherwise, we need to lose the expectation!
Some Last Thoughts.
Being self-taught and perpetually curious pays off. It’s been a blast so far, considering that I’ve already got the monetization feature turned on.
I have a coaching background and I apply self-coaching principles to my work. One of the fundamental first steps of coaching is to have a clear understanding of what the coachee hopes to achieve from the coaching relationship. I did not answer this question just yet because I am still learning how Medium works. Once I will get an understanding of the platform and get a better feeling of readers’ expectations, I will start exploring more. My objective is to explore many possibilities no matter how viable, or realistic they may look at first sight.
On Medium, we may exploit our current situation and knowledge to make the best out of it, but we can as well discover that it doesn’t turn out the way we’d hoped, planned, or expected.
So, for sure I will use branching and forking to stay flexible with alternative paths. I am sure that you need to have an ace in your hand if you don’t want to see your work come crashing down one day.
Work alone will not guarantee the benefits based on my experience. However, I am aware that once you gain new insights on what you know, and you add them to whatever prior experience you have, your chances may increase.
Thanks for reading.
