5 Habits That Sabotage Your Creativity and How to Beat Them

Photo by Mehmet Altıntaş on pexels.com

Have you been staring blankly at a computer screen, waiting in vain for a spark of creativity?

You’re not alone. Recently, I caught myself stuck in a similar rut.

Certain everyday habits, seemingly harmless, were the culprits stifling my creative energy.

I rearranged my daily routine and introduced practices that reignited my artistic flame. Now, my creativity is flourishing like never before.

Here are five habits that kill your creativity:

Too much technology.

Technology is a blessing. But it is also a double-edged sword that cuts into our creative spirits.

The relentless stream of notifications and being easily accessible makes it hard to focus.

Imagine Sherlock Holmes solving a complex case while scrolling through his Instagram feed. Would he still reach those brilliant conclusions with his mind fragmented? Highly unlikely.

Nowadays, getting into a state of flow is not a problem. Remaining in the zone is. As Holmes’ genius lies in his undivided attention to detail, our creativity demands undivided focus as well.

We have cultivated a culture of instant gratification. It leaves little room for the slow, reflective thought that creativity often requires.

Due to the constant flow of information and entertainment, we have no drive to use our imagination. We seek refuge from boredom in Netflix and YouTube videos. When, in fact, boredom is a fertile ground for creativity.

Creativity booster:

  • Strive for harmony between your online life and offline moments. It’s about finding the sweet spot where technology serves as a tool, not an oppressor.
  • Limit email and social media checking to three times a day — morning, midday, and late afternoon.
  • Make the bedroom or a creative workspace a tech-free zone.
  • Unsubscribe from unnecessary email lists and unfollow social media accounts that don’t add value.
  • Once a month, commit to a weekend without any technology whatsoever. Think of it as your ‘Walden’ retreat, a time to reconnect with your inner Self and rediscover the natural rhythm of your creativity.

You avoid failure.

Creativity thrives when you dare to experiment and explore the unknown.

We play it safe, sticking to familiar paths rather than venturing into the uncharted territories of original thought. We become our worst critics, sabotaging our confidence until we are paralysed at the very thought of starting something new.

We’ve been conditioned to view failures as dead-ends rather than stepping stones.

But you cannot avoid ‘failure’ in life. J.K. Rowling faced many rejections before ‘Harry Potter’ cast its spell worldwide. Thomas Edison saw thousands of ‘failures’ before the light bulb moment.

Since you cannot avoid failure, learn how to thrive on it.

Failure isn’t the end. It is a part of every learning process. Every mistake offers you a lesson. Every mistake is a lesson in disguise, an opportunity to learn and grow.

Creativity booster:

  • Calm your anxiety with meditation. Observe your surroundings to enhance sensory experiences and inspire creative ideas.
  • Experiment with different forms of creative expression (e.g., painting, writing, music) to stimulate different parts of your brain.
  • Dive into the stories of successful people who once stood where you are. Their journeys are a testament to the power of perseverance.
  • Swap out negative self-talk with constructive thoughts. Instead of thinking, “I failed at this task,” reframe it as “I learned something new from this attempt.”

You never fail. You persist. You keep your eyes on the prize and follow through with your vision. The path might not always be clear or favourable, but the journey — your journey — is invaluable.

Food you eat.

Have you ever wondered why some days you feel like a creative powerhouse and others you are stuck in a mental fog?

Believe it or not, the answer might lie in your kitchen. What we eat heavily impacts our mood and creativity. Our gut is our second brain.

The good bacteria in your gut are crucial for making and controlling chemicals that affect how your brain works. But when we load up on too much sugar and processed food, it throws our gut out of whack.

It stirs up an inflammatory response throughout the body. This chronic inflammation has been linked to depression and anxiety. And let’s face it. Feeling low is never good for our creative vibes.

Think of the food you eat as fuelling your inner artist with the right kind of grub.

Creativity booster:

  • Aim for a rainbow on your plate. 🌈 Berries, leafy greens, oranges. The more colours, the better. 🍇🥦
  • Befriend the good fats. 🥑🐟 Snack on nuts, enjoy avocado toast and have some fatty fish like salmon a couple of times a week.
  • Fibre keeps your gut bugs happy. And a happy gut is a happy brain. Whole grains, beans, and legumes are your go-to for a fibre boost.
  • Your brain is mostly water, so keeping hydrated helps you think clearer and be more creative. 💧
  • Invest in probiotics and prebiotics. 🍎🍊 Yogurt, kefir, and kombucha for probiotics; onions, garlic, and bananas for prebiotics.
  • Eat without distractions, chew slowly, and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

Comparison.

Comparing yourself to others is a trap that many of us fall into, often without even realizing it.

Comparing your ‘behind-the-scenes’ to everyone else’s ‘highlight reel’ chips away your confidence.

Creativity is not a competition. It thrives on authenticity. Constant comparison leads you to unconsciously mimic others, blurring your unique perspective and voice.

Learn to celebrate your uniqueness. What you create, how you create it, and the story behind it — it is all uniquely you.

Instead of measuring your progress against others, focus on how far you’ve come and where you want to go. Learn from others, but don’t compare. Use others’ successes and failures as learning opportunities, not as benchmarks for your self-worth.

Progress is not measured against others but in the steps you take on your path.

Creativity booster:

  • Journal about your strengths, passions, and experiences that shape who you are. Use affirmations to reinforce your unique value. Try something like, “My creativity is a reflection of my unique perspective and experiences.”
  • Turn envy into inspiration. What can you learn from them? How can their journey inspire your path?
  • Practice mindfulness. When you create, do it mindfully. Immerse yourself in the creative process without worrying about external judgments or comparisons.
  • Curate your social media feed. Follow accounts that inspire you and make you feel good about your journey. Unfollow or mute those that spark negative comparisons.

Paralysis by analysis.

Overthinking is a major bump in the road to creativity.

Analysing every detail to perfection paralyses the decision-making process. When you overthink, you aim for perfection, which doesn’t exist.

Creativity flourishes in spontaneity and intuitive decision-making.

Overthinking drowns out your intuitive voice — the source of creative insight. The subconscious mind, where many creative connections are made, gets overshadowed by the conscious, over-analytical mind.

You won’t paint a masterpiece by being fixated on the precise angle of every stroke. You have to allow the brush to dance freely across the canvas.

When you analyse every detail of your creative endeavour, you start viewing it as a chore, rather than an expression of joy. The irony is that analysis, meant to enhance creation, becomes the very force that stifles it.

Creativity booster:

  • Spend moments in quiet reflection before you begin your creative work. Breathe deeply, clear your mind, and let your intuition lead the way.
  • Play. Paint with your fingers, write freely without editing, dance without choreography — let the child within take over.
  • Step outside. Immerse yourself in nature. Let the sights, sounds, and smells of the natural world inspire you and awaken your senses.
  • Change the routine. Rearrange your workspace, try a new creative tool or technique, or work at different times of the day.

Remember, creativity isn’t a destination. It is a continuous, ever-evolving journey.

It’s about learning, growing, and embracing the full spectrum of experiences — both the challenges and triumphs.

Go ahead, paint with vibrant colours, write your story with bold strokes, dance to the rhythm of your heart, and let your creativity soar to new heights. The world is your canvas, and you are the artist.

Unleash your creativity, and let it light up the world!
