5 Biggest Misconceptions About Life That Make You Miserable

Let’s debunk myths about life that make you unhappy.

Life is surreal.

It is filled with more mysteries than a David Lynch movie and more plot twists than a Tarantino film. It is hard to keep up, let alone navigate turns of events.

We are bombarded with advice on how to attain happiness and unlock the secrets of contentment. But what if the key to a better life isn’t about adding more tricks to the mix?

What if the key to a better life is debunking popular myths about life?

Today, I want to peel the layers of conventional beliefs that might be leading us astray.

Buckle up as we embark on a journey to debunk some of the most pervasive myths about life, and in doing so, find a path to contentment.

Life must be perfect to be happy.

In an era of social media and curated content, the pressure to appear flawless is overwhelming.

The misconception that perfection equals worth leads us to constant self-criticism and the pursuit of an unattainable ideal.

Life is a mess. And because of the unpredictable twists and turns, it is captivating. The relentless pursuit of perfection is the recipe for chronic dissatisfaction.

I used to believe happiness meant a perfect career, a perfect boyfriend and a perfect appearance. I was anxious for my life to feel right. The pursuit made me constantly dissatisfied.

It wasn’t until I realized that imperfections and mistakes are an inherent part of life that I began to experience genuine happiness. The beauty of life lies in its flaws.

You want to be happy? Embrace life’s imperfections. They are like cracks in the sidewalk where the wildflowers grow. Don’t be the one trying to fix those cracks. Be the one who appreciates the wildflowers.

You won’t find contentment amidst a perfect apartment, clean kitchen, or flawless makeup. You will stumble on happiness in the least expected places, like cluttered corners of your home where memories are made. Making a mess with your kids when baking an apple pie, getting lost in a foreign city, meeting new people and savouring street food.

Pursuing happiness isn’t about striving for an idealized version of life but about cherishing the unscripted and imperfect moments that make it unforgettable.

It is spontaneity and authenticity that make us feel alive.

More is better.

In a consumer-driven world, it is easy to fall into the trap of accumulating stuff to finally be content.

Our modern world tells us that the more stuff we own, the happier we’ll be. So, we accumulate possessions like a squirrel hoarding nuts for the winter. But happiness isn’t a crowded attic.

Possessions can’t buy happiness. They can bring temporary joy, sure, but it’s like trying to fill the Grand Canyon with pebbles.

Ironically, when my paycheck was at the highest, I was at my lowest. This isn’t to say that money is the root of misery. But many people fool themselves it will bring them everlasting happiness. Once they win the lottery, all the problems will magically disappear. They won’t.

Money is never the issue. Our perception of it is.

We need to learn to let go of our attachments to possessions. While financial security is essential for a comfortable life, genuine happiness doesn’t live in a new car or the latest gadget. True happiness is found in meaningful relationships, personal growth, and having a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

It is time for a mindset makeover.

Forget the idea that a room full of things will make you happy. True wealth isn’t in what you own but in the moments you collect. It’s the experience of a road trip with friends, a sunset on the beach, or a quiet morning with a good book. Those are the treasures worth keeping.

Let’s ditch the idea that more stuff equals more joy. Start collecting memories instead of things. It’s way more fun, trust me!

Success equals happiness.

One of the most deeply ingrained misconceptions in our society is the belief that success and happiness are synonymous.

From a young age, we are taught that achieving certain milestones — landing a high-paying job, owning a luxurious house, or climbing the corporate ladder — will guarantee happiness.

This narrative becomes a blueprint for life, making us believe that happiness comes from doing instead of being. The reality is far more nuanced.

The pursuit of success can be a relentless journey, and tying our happiness exclusively to external achievements leaves us perpetually miserable.

Success is just one facet of a fulfilling life.

Cultivating meaningful relationships stands out as a cornerstone of genuine happiness. These connections provide emotional support, companionship, and a sense of belonging that external pursuits cannot replicate.

In the same way, passions and activities that bring joy, whether they be artistic, intellectual, or recreational, add depth and meaning to life.

Once you feel fulfilled because of the support and purpose you already have, success can follow.

The pursuit of success should be viewed as a complementary aspect of a well-rounded life rather than the sole determinant of happiness.

Control equals security.

In a world where we can summon food, information, or a ride with the touch of a screen, the illusion of control appears more seductive than ever.

But what if I told you that our relentless desire for control, the very thing we believe will bring us happiness, is often the root cause of our unhappiness?

We often act as if we can control everything, but reality consistently proves us wrong.

We cannot command the weather, the actions of others, or the whims of fate. Attempting to do so is a futile endeavour leading to anxiety and disappointment. When we release our obsession with control, we free ourselves from the weight of unrealistic expectations.

Instead of trying to be the puppet master of the universe, why not turn the focus inward? Instead of trying to control life, learn to control your mind. Instead of fearing the unknown, dance with it.

With this newfound mindset, challenges become opportunities and stepping stones to greatness. Freedom lies not in control but in the ability to adapt and flow.

When you let go of control and expectations, you stop wasting energy on inner turmoil and redirect it toward meaningful actions.

Life is inherently unpredictable, and attempting to micromanage every aspect is a bloody battle.

While we can influence some aspects of our lives, many things are beyond our control. Embracing uncertainty and learning to adapt to unexpected situations leads to a greater sense of peace and happiness.

Life’s surprises often bring opportunities to become a better human being.

When life change, I will start thinking differently.

When I have more money, I will learn to feel abundant.

When I am in a relationship, I will feel loved.

We grew up believing that external conditions dictate our mindset.

It’s a bit like expecting the weather to dictate your mood. While events do influence our thoughts and emotions, the power to shape our lives ultimately resides within ourselves.

Your mindset plays a significant role in how you experience life.

You only have control over three things in your life — the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take. How you use these three things determines how happy you are.

If you don’t like what you are producing and experiencing, do not try to change the external world, change your responses. Change your negative thoughts to positive ones. Change what you daydream about. Change your habits. Change what you read. Change how you talk.

Even during challenging times, you have the power to shift your perspective.

Feeling abundant involves appreciating what you already have, and recognizing the richness of life beyond material wealth. Abundance can be found in meaningful relationships, personal growth, experiences, and even the simple pleasures of life.

Romantic relationships can provide a unique form of love and companionship. But your relationship status does not define your worth.

Self-love and self-worth are intrinsic, not contingent on external validations. Understanding this empowers you to embrace your individuality and navigate relationships from a place of strength and authenticity.

The key to a more fulfilling life lies not in waiting for external circumstances to align but in recognizing the power you hold over your mindset. By cultivating a positive internal landscape, you become the orchestrator of your narrative, irrespective of the changing seasons of life.

True happiness is like a personal treasure hunt.

It lies in the present moment, and in our ability to handle life’s crazy twists. It’s about accepting our quirks, appreciating the journey, and knowing that happiness isn’t just a destination. It is a lifestyle.

In the words of the great philosopher and author, Albert Camus,

“You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.”

Life’s a beautiful, messy, unpredictable adventure, and it’s high time you started enjoying the ride.
