What is a Google Android Instant App and why you should use it as a developer?

A Google Android Instant app is a feature that allows your users to use the app without having to install it. This functionality was introduced by Google in 2017 because so many apps have been developed and research shows that many apps are barely used. And it ‘s unnecessary when an app takes to much space on the device. In addition, Google wants to introduce users to your app in an accessible way. This is possible with Instant app.
The advantages and disadvantages
As an app developer, the advantages are that you can offer the app in an accessible way. The user doesn’t need to install the full app to get the information they want. The disadvantage is that the app must be small, but as an app developer you are therefore forced to focus and make choices. So, in the end it’s worth it.
Example of an Instant app
An example of an Instant app is that of a mail order company. You would like to be kept informed of where your package is. The mail order company prefers that you install the full app, but as a user you will not install the app if they only come by a few times. It is therefore not necessary for the user to have the app on his phone. With the Instant app you can offer part of the functionality so that the user still knows where his package is. The advantage of an instant app over the website is that users will install the app faster if they like the functionality.
Our example
Another example is that of my company. Our company (www.EcoScanApp.eu) makes it easy for users to sort waste in the right way. They can use the app to take a photo of the waste and/or scan the barcode. Based on the location of the user, we will tell them what the sorting rules are and therefore in which container it belongs. We have developed an Instant app so that it is possible for manufacturers to place a QR code on their packaging that refers to our website. This allows them to immediately use the Instant app and the producer can give the customer the right sorting advice instead of a fixed disposal icon. The advantage of this is that the waste ends up in the right container, which benefits the recycling process.
Why should you support it as a developer?
It forces you to make the app smaller and you have to split it up into multiple modules. This has the advantage that your app is easier to maintain. In addition, it is an advantage that you can offer the app in an accessible way. You give your users the opportunity to try it first. Do they like the app? Then they can download the full app. This is very user-friendly way of working and users really appreciate that.
How could we implement it?
Yes I am in! But wait… How could we implement it and publish it to the Play store? Then read this article!
