IT HAPPENED TO ME

#48 — That Time I Asked For a Sign

Don’t mess with the Universe

Here’s a little game I used to play, trying to get in better touch with the Universe.

Maybe I’d gotten myself into a rut. Maybe my life had become way too predictable. Maybe I needed a kick in the butt.

All I know is that when I left for lunch that day, I set the intention. I asked the Universe to give me some kind of sign: was I on the right track? Am I going to change jobs? Will I meet someone new and interesting? Where should I be centering my attention?

There were so many questions I could have asked the Universe, but I didn’t want to be too specific. I just wanted the Universe to figure out exactly what I needed to see. I just wanted to get some kind of indication from the Universe, like a friendly tap on the shoulder, or something that would make me turn my head. I guess I was wishing for a “something/anything” clue.

So, in my mind, I just kept repeating the phrase, “Show me a sign. Please show me a sign. Thank you for showing me a sign.” I kept that script running as I walked the half-mile city block between the hospital, where I worked, and the Bread Coffee Shop I’d been going to for lunch every day for two whole months so far.

I liked going there, and becoming a “fly on the wall.” It was easy to become invisible and just listen absent-mindedly to whatever conversations were happening around me. I almost always “struck gold” on that front. In fact, I’d been thinking about going for 300 lunches in a row, and then writing a book that featured the best conversations I’d had the luck to overhear.

I loved imagining what kind of sign the Universe was about to show me. Would it be the love between a mother and daughter? Or maybe seeing someone find something they’d be looking for?

“I once was lost… but now I’m found… ”

— Amazing Grace, traditional song

The possibilities were endless. I was doing my best to stay open and receptive to whatever the Universe might be trying to show me. But, nothing could have prepared me for the sign that showed up.

There, in the corner of the parking lot, were 5 men and a pickup truck. They were working on a project together. The project: installing a 10'x10' electric sign, to be displayed at a height of 30' above street level, changing the name of the motel that existed above the Bread Coffee Shop.

The motel had previously been part of a chain of motels with the main colors of orange and turquoise as part of their logo. But starting immediately, the motel above the Bread Coffee Shop would now be branded as part of a chain that had some Spanish words in its name.

It doesn’t matter what the old name was or what the new name of the motel would be. What matters is that the 5 men with the pickup truck were busy doing something very important. They were installing… a SIGN!

Key Message: When you are making a request of the Universe, please keep in mind that the Universe can be very literal. I asked to see a sign, and I saw a sign.

…What will your next request to the Universe be? Make it a good one! You might get exactly what you‘re asking for!
