4 Top Soft Skills That Are Essential For A Successful Life
Soft skills are powerful but general characteristics that accentuate a successful life
We must first ask ourselves what are soft skills, and why are they always overlooked above hard skills. Hard skills on the other hand are what we learn to be qualified, like builders, professional qualifications, trades, etc.
Soft skills are difficult to define, they are non-technical, subtle yet powerful capabilities that make a person noticeable, even in a crowd. A good example is, a person of friendly nature who walks into a room with a broad smile and brings a welcoming, warm and vibrant personality with him. The atmosphere in the room is immediately lit up, and everyone is ready for whatever this person is up to. The Bible says,
‘’Your skill will make room for you.’’ (Proverb 18:16)
Such personalities draw others to them, make them more likeable, and as such they flow with everyone. Employers are always looking for soft skills in hiring. If two applicants with equal qualifications apply for a job, the one with a soft skill, like flexibility, will prevail over the other. This is a case of not just doing the job but doing it well and carrying others along too.
These are the four essential skills that will definitely push you ahead of others in life:
Communication
This might seem simple enough, but do you notice how some are able to actively put their message across enough to convince everyone? Salespeople are good at this, but they acquire this skill after their qualification and are able to close multiple sales. An engineer for instance, with an already hard skill, knows about the working of equipment, say an industrial grinder, but he still needs to communicate this well to buyers. He needs to be able to convince the users that his particular one is better than the others in the market.
Writers also need this soft skill to be able to put their message across to readers. Some readers brag about certain authors and will always read their books simply because they love how they write.
Critical Thinking/Positive Attitude
How does one think critically? You examine all facts realistically, and not deceive yourself. This way, you build a positive attitude toward the matters on the ground.
It is sad to say, that not many people look into issues realistically before making a decision, and of course, we know what the outcome will be. Shambolic, that will erase all hope.
If we critically examine issues, it is likely to give us hope towards our aspirations. A positive attitude doesn’t just happen, it can be learned and developed. See possibilities and good in all outcomes from the start, and this will gear you towards seeking ways to achieve your potential.
Adaptability
How adaptable are you in life? A friend once remarked that he who cannot bend must break, because flexibility is the motion of life. Are you able to quickly adjust to the changes life throws at you? We read of people suffering mental health breakdowns during the pandemic because they were not able to adjust to the changes brought about by the pandemic.
When you are adaptable, you can quickly adjust to changes in your work environment, like introducing AI and some rudiment programmes to speed up work. I know of a surgeon who went into depression, and eventually committed suicide when a precision surgery was introduced in a London hospital. He was trained to open up patients and see organs to be operated upon. His idea of a machine pointing it out and operating through a screen is alien to him. He was unable to cope.
Nothing in life is stagnant, there will be changes and improvement, and we must be prepared and ready to embrace the changes.
Teamwork
Are you able to work and flow with others? If not, you are not a team player. No one can effectively perform as a single person. We need the interaction of others in life, in work, business, and in play too. We come across people of different natures, and we must be ready to partner up and get things done if we need to. That is what teamwork is all about. Together, everyone achieves more.
Presenting different viewpoints and using other people’s ideas and opinions can help us do our jobs better. Teamwork is not about competing against each other but appreciating individuals’ contributions.
It takes effort to learn and develop ourselves into team players, but it can be done.
Benefits of Soft Skills
The benefits are indisputable to one’s progress in life. A person with soft skills will get along in life more than others without the skills.
People with soft skills usually stand out as high performers with additional qualities, such as the ability to communicate clearly, the ability to work well with others and the ability to manage their time effectively.
