Summary

Linda, an avid traveler, shares her top four pet peeves about traveling, including jet lag, crowds, dirty hotels, and public washrooms, while still affirming her love for exploration.

Abstract

In an article titled "4 Irritating Things I Hate About Travelling," Linda confesses that despite her passion for travel, there are several aspects that she finds deeply annoying. She describes the severe jet lag she experiences after returning from Asia to Canada, which affects her for nearly a month with extreme tiredness and loss of appetite. Linda also expresses her disdain for crowds and long line-ups, which she tries to avoid by traveling during off-peak times and booking attractions in advance. The cleanliness of hotels is another concern for her, as she values basic standards of hygiene and will switch accommodations if necessary. Lastly, Linda discusses the challenges of using public washrooms, which can be dirty or smelly, and how she manages her water intake to avoid them. Despite these grievances, Linda's love for travel remains strong, and she encourages readers to share their own travel annoyances.

4 Irritating Things I Hate About Travelling

Yes, travelling can be downright annoying!

What is happening? How is Linda writing about how she hates travelling?

I know. I always preach about how much I love to travel. There are so many things to see and experience. Sadly, even travelling has offending annoyances.

I admit I had to think long and hard about this one.

But I did come up with four things that I absolutely hate about travelling and what I do to get around them!

Jet Lag

Here, I will assume that I am going to Asia. The time zone is completely opposite from Canada, so jet lag hits me the hardest. Now, jet lag does not exist when I land. I’m full of excitement and pumped to the brim with adrenaline.

The only thing I’m ready for is eating and shopping!

It’s when I get home that jet lag wreaks havoc upon me. I’m not sure if this is normal. However, jet lag affects me for almost a whole month when I return to Canada from Asia.

When I first get back home, I can sleep for days. No joke.

Extreme tiredness and exhaustion settle in. I also lose my appetite for weeks and feel nauseous every day. Therefore, the pounds I gained while gorging on mountains of food in Asia come right back off.

I’ll start to feel a little better in about three weeks.

I know there are plenty of suggestions to get over jet lag. Some people take melatonin or try to adjust their sleep schedule before their trip.

I actually don’t do anything at all. The only thing I do is sleep. I’m not sure if it’s the right thing to do, but I prefer to let my body readjust by itself.

Crowds and Line-ups

I’m guessing that this is on everyone’s list of annoyances. Who enjoys crowds and long lines? Not me!

It’s difficult to get around this when you travel during peak season or visit high-traffic tourist attractions.

To get around this, I try to travel during low peak times of the year. I know that I might miss out on some things, but I think fewer crowds would make my trip more enjoyable. There’s always something else to see.

If I must travel during peak times, I’ll try to get to places early in the day. It’s no use visiting an attraction when all you see are the backs of people’s heads or end up playing elbow wars with strangers.

Oh, and where possible, I’ll try to arrange things online. Sometimes, it’s a lot faster when you go through the digital route.

Dirty Hotels

Given the choice, I’d pay more for a clean hotel. There’s nothing worse than being faced with a horrific hotel bathroom.

Even if the hotel room is where I only rest and freshen up, it still needs to have basic cleanliness standards.

The decor doesn’t have to have cutting-edge, state-of-the-art designs. It can have basic facilities, but I do need it to be clean!

If it’s completely unbearable, I might resort to switching rooms or even hotels. Thankfully, that has never happened. I usually avoid the nasty spots if possible. It also helps to check out reviews of the hotel online before booking.

There are a lot of actual traveler photos that will show you exactly what you would be paying for.

Public Washrooms

I know that this is also on everyone’s list. Having to suppress your bowels until you find a restroom isn’t the most pleasant of experiences.

It’s even worse when you finally find one, but it’s virtually impossible to use because it’s so dirty or smelly. Or both.

If I know that I’ll be somewhere without access to a restroom, I refrain from drinking too much water beforehand. This is the only way I avoid using public washrooms!

P.S. Check out this story here about my public washroom experience in Iceland. You’ll be completely shocked.

Travelling will always be near and dear to my heart! Although I listed four annoying travelling annoyances, I still love to travel!

I’m tagging some other travellers to hear about their grievances!
