4 Businesses That Were Highly Profitable in 2023 but Will Disappear in 2024
Don’t waste your time and money focusing on them.

When it comes to starting a business, the majority of people look at which current side hustles have achieved good growth in the year to start something similar.
Many people started a YouTube channel because they saw someone doing well making content. Others began selling on Amazon because they saw a video of a guy with a successful marketing structure. And many enter investments through recommendations from friends.
For example, I started freelancing after seeing all my friends succeed with this business model. I also know many people who started something because they saw others doing well.
This is a good idea in many cases because you will have a notion of how much money certain areas can give you and how to start. But there are certain industries that, even if they performed well in 2023, will probably bankrupt you if you start them in 2024.
For that reason, according to my experience starting businesses and investments, here is a list of industries that could disappear next year because they will not be relevant anymore.
eStores from third-party brands.
Amazon stores, online Shopify stores with merchandise from China, or any eCommerce with third-party products will be completely bad businesses for 2024.
The first reason is that there is already a lot of competition.
When dropshipping started, it was the best way for anyone who decided to open a store to make six figures a year. However, thanks to all those videos and the hype of “everyone can do it,” an absurd number of these types of businesses open yearly.
And you know what happens when there’s a crazy amount of competition? Profit margins can shrink to less than 3%.
This causes the majority of these businesses to fail in their first year. For example, last year, 90% of the stores that opened went bankrupt.
The relevancy of this business has decreased considerably over the last four years because it is simply not as profitable as it was during the pandemic. By 2024, this business model’s annual growth is expected to be close to 0%.

Also, many brands are changing their business model from B2B (business to business) to D2C (direct to consumer) to save costs this year.
This means that big companies will stop working with other businesses to start selling directly to customers.
One example of this is Nike's last boycott. They announced that they will no longer support people who sell their brand through Amazon and will stop supplying these retailers because they damage the market and trust.
Finally, big companies like Shein are trying to become the next Amazon with their own products. For that reason, there are a lot of products that are so cheap that you cannot compete with them no matter how cheap you try to put your products.
What to focus your money on instead
If you want to make an online store, search for a way to make your own products. Even if you use an already established manufacturer to create that product, try to have an original idea.
I know it’s harder to start something from scratch (This is the main reason why people choose to sell existing products from China). But it will be more profitable in the long run and can ensure that you can be in business without failing in the first year.
If you don’t have money to start something that big, then start with Affiliate marketing and grow a content creator platform profile. Getting started is free, and it will help you know how good a seller you are without putting up capital.
AI-generated products and services.
Artificial intelligence was the innovation of the year. This business model began with the popularity of ChatGPT in November 2022, and from there, people created thousands of businesses that use this type of technology throughout this year.
Over the internet, you can find courses on how to use artificial intelligence effectively. There are platforms dedicated to solving a specific problem with artificial intelligence, from writing assistants to image creation. And many payment platforms offer different services generated by AI.
And people went crazy about it the whole year because it was something new.
It was incredible to see how a computer could do things that only humans were able to do. So, people started investing in it to see how far this technology could go.
But, by 2024, artificial intelligence will no longer be an innovation. We all already know how to use chatGPT and Bard. We all know that AI can modify and create images. And we already know that he can be a good assistant.
So, making AI-based apps will not be as profitable next year as in 2023. So, unless you create a better version of the big platforms that are already established, there’s not much you can do to surprise people with this technology anymore.
What to focus on instead.
You can use AI to improve your performance in something you do manually. You can improve your productivity by teaching artificial intelligence something you do daily that does not need your brain constantly.
And you can focus the time you save on creating a new side hustle.
If you work in the technology industry, look for what you can improve that doesn't already exist and focus your time and resources on it.
My advice, in general, is to look for the next big thing because the AI market is already saturated and exploited.
Airbnbs and short rental in general.
Short rental, or Airbnb, is another business that was quite successful during the last three years but will not go very far in 2024.
Airbnb had incredible growth in 2020 thanks to the closure of hotels worldwide. People needed options, and Airbnb was the only application actively offering short-rental services.
Also, many people wanted to look for a cheap way to vacation, and this was a good opportunity to do it with the whole family without the expensive fees in luxury hotels.
However, when the pandemic ended, hotels came with new business models, attractive prices, and quality that eliminated the competition almost immediately.
Additionally, many states in different countries have begun to implement laws ranging from banning Airbnb in certain areas to increasing taxes, making this business unsustainable in many parts of the world.
Unfortunately, many people stopped using Airbnb due to the poor treatment, big fees, and bad services they were receiving from renters, which caused the application to decline in popularity.
Right now, a lot of people who have Airbnb are selling those houses because they are not profitable anymore, not even in tourist areas. So, this is definitely not a good moment to invest in this business if you want to make money with Real Estate.
What you should focus your money on instead
If you already have the money for a house, then try long-term rentals. It will give you a stable monthly passive income, and it’s more secure and feasible in the long term.
Many people who had Airbnb are switching to this model, and they realize that it’s easier to maintain and better for long-term profit. For example, a YouTuber mentioned that she had months of losses with Airbnb, and after switching to long-term, she could pay the house loan and have cash flow every month without fail.
Cryptocurrencies.
Cryptocurrencies were in a period of crisis and recession during the last two years, which made them completely lose relevance.
The two major currencies suffered a drop of more than 70%. Many companies went bankrupt, and many cryptos that had promising futures disappeared. However, everything started to stabilize this year, and the remaining coins gave excellent entry prices throughout 2023.
However, I believe that by 2024, there will not be good opportunities to invest your money there because the prices will already be too high, and you may have the risk of investing at the top and losing all your capital.
If you didn’t invest in this market in 2023, I don’t feel you should try it now that everything is green. That’s how most investors who don’t know about ups and downs periods lose money. They believe that something is relevant again because everybody is talking about it, but when everyone is saying that something is good, it is because it is too late.
In what to focus your money on instead
Look for other markets that still have a good entry price. For example, the stock and real estate market has not yet recovered 100%.
Look for investment funds that you can invest monthly without having to be an expert and thus not have to worry about losses of individual products.
If, despite everything, you want to invest in cryptocurrencies, do not wait for them to be more expensive; keep in mind an entry, exit, and backup price in case something goes wrong, and do not put all your money there.
Shopify had a big impact during the pandemic. However, every year, it has become less and less popular. Big brands that used to sell to businesses are now creating a new strategy focused on final clients to save costs.
Products with artificial intelligence were good this year because it was something new that we were not used to seeing, but I consider that next year, people will be tired of seeing cartoon images of their own pictures, and there will be a lot of resources free to use.
Airbnb and short-term rentals were good when hotels were closed. Now they have a lot of competition from big companies and less comfort for people who want to vacation.
Finally, cryptocurrencies are green again, which means you are already late to the party. If you didn’t buy anything during the year, I don’t feel you should buy something in 2024.
