31 Positive Words to Inspire You in August

I always feel a bit of sadness in August. I know the summer is coming to an end. Sometimes the weather isn’t as warm and sunny as it has been in June and July. Toward the end of the month, it starts to get dark noticeably earlier in the evening.

This year, I’m planning to make the most of the last month of summer by spending as much time in the garden as possible, by going on day trips with my family, and by savoring the little pleasures and treats in life.

Looking through the list of positive words for this month, some jump out at me.

Balance

I have always struggled with the tree pose in yoga. If you’re not familiar with this pose, it requires you to balance on one leg and then the other. I always wobble! I think it reflects a lack of balance in my life.

Maintaining a good balance of the different elements in my life is something I’ve struggled with — and still do to a certain extent. I have a tendency to over-work and to put myself last on my list of priorities. These days, I put my health and well-being first by beginning the day with a 20–30 minute yoga session on YouTube. It’s so important to do that — and it’s not selfish. If you’re happy and healthy, it will have a positive effect on the people around you, too.

So, in August, I’m going to try to achieve more balance in my life by:

  • taking some time to just rest and reflect
  • spending time with loved ones
  • exercising at least once a day
  • trying to slow down and not rush around so much.

Intuition

Intuition is underrated in our society. It is defined as “the ability to understand something instinctively without the need for conscious reasoning.” We value mind-based reasoning so much, yet often ignore intuition, which can be described as a “gut reaction,” because it seems to arise from deep within your belly.

Usually our intuitive voice is very quiet, while our mind can scream at us. Therefore, it’s easier to ignore our intuition and pay attention to our mind. Yet, our intuitive reaction to an event or a person is usually the correct one. When we have a decision to make, we can be torn in different directions, especially if our rational brain cannot make sense of our intuitive reaction.

Paying attention to what’s going on within your body through such practices as meditation and yoga and focusing on the present moment through mindfulness can help you to tune into your intuition and listen to it when it speaks to you.

Intention

Setting an intention for each day is a powerful tool. You decide how you want to live your life that day. Some examples are:

“I will live in the present moment today.”

“I will be kind to myself today.”

“I will take a five-minute break from work every hour today.”

Another way of setting an intention is to choose one thing that needs to be done today and saying you will do it. So, if you needed to fill in a tax form, you’d say:

“I will fill in that tax form today.”

Don’t add more tasks to the end of the sentence. If you end up doing more, that’s fine. If you don’t manage to do anything other than fill in the tax form, that’s fine, too.

It’s good to have daily intentions and goals — they keep us motivated and moving forward with our lives. However, we can put ourselves under so much pressure that we no longer enjoy our lives. It’s important to strike a balance between setting intentions and goals, taking action, and spending some time just being yourself and enjoying your life exactly as it is today.
