300 Words 1/10/2024 | Wax on Wax Off

This isn’t about karate.

Do you remember that iconic scene in the original The Karate Kid where Mr. Miyagi starts to teach Danny karate?

You know the scene with the iconic “Wax on Wax off” moment?

(Here is a link to the scene if you don’t remember it. If you’ve never seen The Karate Kid, I highly recommend you watch it at least once.)

I was reminded of that scene after co-hosting this space with Christel (AKA @Christel_OCC ) on X today. I kind of felt like Mr. Miyagi by the end of the space.

I felt like Mr. Miyagi not because I am a karate master, but because he emphasizes breathing (which I did in the space). He also used analogies and performance in one skill to prepare for another skill.

You seen when Danny thinks all he is doing is waxing a boring car he is actually reinforcing the very muscle memory that will help him with karate. Only Mr. Miyagi can see that though.

In the same way when you practice giving an Impromptu speech you are learning skills that are relevant to other areas of life. Like speaking on and hosting a space on X for instance.

As mentioned in one of my other articles. Impromptu is a form of public speaking where you are given 7 minutes to pick between 3 topics and talk about 1 of them. No notes. No GPT. Just your brain and a piece of paper to outline your speech on.

When you learn to master giving an Impromptu speech you are learning a skillset that will serve you in other areas of life.

Want to be able to speak succinctly and eloquently in front of your peers? Want to gain a larger following by speaking on X spaces? What to understand how to write more compelling hooks? Want to be able to hold deep conversations on a wide variety of subjects? Want to be able to think on your feet to changing circumstances? Want to be calm cool and collected in ambiguous situations?

All of this and more can be unlocked by a simple seven minute speech.

So you see this story isn’t about karate. It isn’t even about public speaking and Impromptu. It is about the fact that sometimes a coach can see things that you can’t, and can guide you towards your desired outcome even if it appears that you are doing the complete opposite.

Regards,

Jeff.

P.S. I was going to write an article summarizing the space, but @jairodri did such a great job I have to link it here.
