How my first month went and what’s next

How do I become a better writer? Easy. Write more. Write consistently. Evaluate your old writing. Improve.

When I first became a Medium member, I set forth with the goal of publishing something every day for the whole month.

It paid off. The key was to seek out publications. I spent the first week or two feeling uncertain if my work was good enough.

It was. I found publications in poetry because that was where I felt I wanted to flex some creative muscles and take in different perspectives. I read stories from many of you reading this, and I loved them. I highlighted and clapped for the ones I enjoyed and even commented on a few posts because of the inspiration they gave me.

I’ve tried a lot of different things in terms of writing here but it’s been a fun endeavor. I feel okay with posting something everyday and I intend on checking in next month to see how things are going.

Any super satisfying moments?

The greatest joy happened when a few of my works got curated. My first curated piece, funnily enough, was from my second day of posting.

It’s a simple, and to the point poem that serves as a snapshot of an idea. It’s not written with any specific form in mind but it has a little internal rhyme and what I thought was an interesting perspective.

The other curated pieces were ones that I put some more interactive elements into, like videos and images etc. These were my works more scientific in nature.

I still quite haven’t figured out exactly what it takes to be “curated” but I think it’s just a matter of putting a little more in the way of references, links, and other engaging elements into your work.

Focus on the formatting of your piece as well as the interactive elements and that’s how you make it more appealing to your readers.

So what’s next?

Overall, it’s been an interesting experience and I aim to continue posting at least once a day. Who knows, maybe at a certain point I could make a book of my poetry! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve also made a publication called Eashan’s Thoughts. This is meant to serve as a space for my articles on productivity, education, and other tech-y stuff that I feel like sharing. I won’t be posting to that as consistently as I post generally to Medium but I’m aiming to post at least two articles there per month.
