3 Words Of Advice For Anyone, Even You
Wisdom from a great-uncle living in paradise
Late Great-uncle LeeLee had the best advice that applied to pretty much every person, including you! It was 3 simple words that had a huge impact on anyone that was lucky enough to hear it…
“Too much humbug!”
That’s it! Three simple words. A phrase that doesn’t exactly sound like advice or the words of wisdom you were maybe hoping for, but nonetheless “Too much humbug!” it is.
So what does it mean?
Me: Uncle LeeLee, do you want me to go to the store tonight so that you have some different food to eat tomorrow?
Uncle LeeLee: No, no, it’s late, too much humbug. I’ll eat the food I have at home.
Me: Uncle LeeLee, you’re almost 90 years old — you shouldn’t be climbing the mango tree anymore. We can get a ladder or have someone pick the mangoes for you.
Uncle LeeLee: No, too much humbug! I can get the mangoes myself.
Uncle LeeLee was all about staying drama-free, promoting simplicity, and spending time only on things that are important and uncomplicated. Anything beyond this was…
Too much humbug!
It’s a beautiful way of life — to spend time, money, and energy only on things and people that truly bring you joy. For Uncle LeeLee, this meant climbing his tall mango tree and picking fresh, delicious, homegrown fruit for his family, neighbors, and friends.
Uncle LeeLee lived in Hawaii for most of his life. The island culture of slow living, relaxation, kindness, and simplicity contributed to his motto. He never actually claimed “too much humbug” as his motto, but he said it often enough, and it definitely stuck with me.
Do I use the phrase? For sure!
When something doesn’t seem like it’s worth my time…
Too much humbug!👋
When someone wants to do something for me that is unnecessary or inconvenient for them…
Too much humbug!👋
When someone is bringing too much drama, I figuratively and physically walk away from it…
Too much humbug!👋
The next time you feel things getting complicated or overwhelming or you want to try to move away from negativity or bad vibes, figuratively throw your peace sign up, wave, walk away, and say…
Too much humbug!👋
Life is too short to spend your minutes on drama and engaging in activities that are bringing you down. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, find activities that make you laugh and smile, travel to places that are breathtaking and inspire you.
Anything beyond this is simply…
Too much humbug!
Thank you for reading this story and allowing me to share my thoughts and honor my late great-uncle from Hawaii. Wishing you many days filled with uplifting activities, awesome people, and of course good reads!
