3 Ways To Avoid Burnout Whilst Working Remotely
If you implement one change today, you’ll be on your way to improving your work-life balance in no time.
Burnout from working remotely could be because you’ve spent too many hours behind your screen, or you’ve been so distracted with work that you’ve forgotten to eat, take breaks and enjoy — can you relate to this?
I know this feeling very well.
Some days I have to take a step back and pause. It’s very easy for me to bury my head deep into work till it’s too far and I am burnt out. Here are 3 of my successful tips which have helped me avoid burnout over the last few months.
- Set reasonable expectations for the day.
I often find myself setting unreasonably high expectations for the day, which then causes me to feel like I haven’t done enough. Be reasonable here, don’t force yourself to do too much.
2. Prioritise your own well being.
Remember that your own well-being is a priority. Often the tasks that feel urgent, can wait. Ask yourself “what’s the worst that can happen if you don’t do XYZ tasks today?”. If it can wait till tomorrow, close your laptop and finish for the day — don’t overwork.
3. Schedule a non-negotiable personal activity
Building in a non-negotiable personal activity (I go on a morning walk) into your schedule helps make sure there is always a natural break or pause in the day. I also schedule “focus time” for at least 30 minutes a day to give the same effect of the “step away from your desk” aspect. Having structure will help you to separate work and life, and avoid the overwhelming feeling of ‘too much to do & too little time’.
Burnout is one thing, but the long term impact is even worse. You’ll be disengaged, and even resent your work.
Act on these tips and you’ll start to feel better in no time.
