3 Things to Remember When You Feel Depressed

You decide how your life goes, and it goes

(Photo: Piyapong Saydaung)

1. It Can’t Stay Forever

Depression doesn’t inform you when it’s starting and when it starts, it gives no promises that it will leave. It doesn’t care whether you’re spiritual or not, it can visit anyone who thinks.

Depression starts with thinking and gradually you start losing your mind and before you know it, you’re trapped in the dark and can’t find the way to the light switch.

Tragedy and life’s challenges can set in at any time and break you so badly you become low and depressed.

But according to the spiritual books, there is a time for everything under the heavens. There’s a time to be sad and a time to be happy. There’s a time to be depressed and a time to rise above it.

When you’re feeling depressed, you need to understand that it cannot stay forever. It’s time will pass just like everything else.

Your life may be crumbling and falling apart, but you have to remember that it’s not the whole of your existence that is crumbling. It’s just a stage in your life that you’re struggling with and, for that reason, you don’t need to keep kicking yourself.

You are the co-creator of your life. The chief architect. You control your life. You decide how your life goes, and it goes. No problem has any power to control you. Definitely not your depression. It has no power to take control of your life and keep you stuck in the darkness of your mind.

If you got in a situation, then there is always a way out, but you must find it. Find ways in which you can break out of your mental prison. This can only happen if you take control and control the way you react to situations around you.

If it’s not something in your control, give yourself time and you will see that time is the greatest healer of all time. Your wounds will heal, no matter how deep. It will leave a scar when it heals, yes, but it will serve as a battle scar to remind you of all the things you’ve overcome.

You will overcome that dark night, but you have to stick around to see it.

There’s a time to be depressed and a time to rise above it.

2. Always Hope for the Best

You may feel like a total mess right now. Your mind may be feeling like a tornado is running through it, but what if there’s a greater purpose? What if all of it is preparing you for something extraordinary?

You have to hope for the best.

The pain and suffering you’re feeling may be preparing you to become the best version of yourself.

The universe does not simply remove suffering from your life, but sometimes uses the bad things to save you from worse things. It uses the bad things to bring about good purposes.

This isn’t to say that pain and suffering are to be adored. Suffering is not good in itself, but it can be used for good in a number of ways. Pain can be a blessing in disguise and you will never see it that way when you’re in the thick of it, but when it leaves and you look back, you’ll actually see how it helped you grow.

You’re loved, and your suffering is the universe’s suffering. When you suffer, the universe suffers alongside you.

But your present suffering is not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to you.

View your depression as a stepping stone into glory days. Change your perspective on how you see problems and your problems will not look the same.

Remain steadfast in your suffering because suffering produces perseverance, and perseverance produces good character. Let perseverance finish its work so that you become mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trials and sufferings because, having stood the test, you will receive your glory.

Problems come into your life not to break you, but to strengthen and motivate you to bring the best out of yourself and others.

Without problems, you’d have nothing to learn and teach others. You’d have no stories to tell. You’d have nothing to offer the world.

The same way you are feeling down, someone else is also feeling down. Seek them out and help where you can and when you do that, you not only empower that person, you also empower yourself and depression packs its bags and leave.

The universe does not simply remove suffering from your life, but sometimes uses the bad things to bring about good purposes.

3. Better Days Will Come

Life is full of ups and downs. Its twists and turns will leave you shaken. The sudden and tragic loss of a loved one, a severe heartbreak that crushes your spirit, the loss of a job that leaves you in fear, drugs and alcohol etc. are among the many things that can shake and make you depressed.

But just because today has shaken you to your core doesn’t mean you won’t feel better and grounded tomorrow.

Sorrows may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. The storm may be knocking off everything you have, but when the storm is over, a rainbow may appear.

Tomorrow is what you say it will be. The hardest part is gathering the strength to decide the kind of day you’re going to have tomorrow.

If you thought yourself into depression, you can’t think your way out of it. Overthinking is not helpful. You must rise up out of it. Rise up and hover over your depression like a bird and choose to see the hands of the universe in it.

The more you overthink, the worse the problem becomes. Remember, thinking brought you to this point and thinking can’t get you out of it. The more you think, the deeper you dig a hole for yourself and the harder it’ll be to get out.

Choose to believe that everything is happening for a reason. Choose to believe that there are no mistakes or accidents.

Choose to believe that better days are coming. It’s true no matter how hard it is to believe that things will actually change.

It’s not the end of the world and so your situation can change. Better days will come whether you can believe it or not.

You can’t quit.

Quitting is not an option for you. Quitters never stay around long enough to win. You’re going to win the battle against your depression and winners don’t quit.

Whatever it is you did that led to your depression, forgive yourself. Have mercy and compassion for yourself. You’d do it for your best friend, so why not you?

As you forgive yourself, forgive others too for the parts they played in your suffering. Forgive the world for not being a much better place.

Reach out to me.

A problem talked about with people who understand is no longer a problem.

If you’re feeling too low to reach out to someone, it’s okay. You can pull yourself out. You can do it. You’ve probably had worse cases, and you got through all of them all on your own.
