Self-Improvement — #ILLUMINATION

3 Takeaways from the Wisdom of Jim Rohn

Reading is the foundation of personal growth

If you want to pursue Self-Improvement, the best thing to do is to invest in yourself. There is no better investment in self than self-education.

Do not confuse education with schooling. The purpose of schooling is to help you learn to read and to introduce you to the diversity of material that you can. Unfortunately, the schools are failing to fulfill the second mandate. Come to think of it, they’re doing a worse job on the first one.

Based on 2005 ACT-tested high school graduates, it appears that only about half of our nation’s ACT-tested high school students are ready for college-level reading. (source)

“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” — Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn was one of the most beloved self-improvement gurus. While I came to know about him later in life, I put him ahead of Zig Ziglar and Earl Nightingale for finesse and effectiveness. He was sincere, humble and hilarious.

Jim Rohn mentored Life coach Tony Robbins and sales expert Brian Tracy. Others who credit Jim Rohn for his influence on their careers include authors Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and T. Harv Eker. (source)

“The difference between where you are today and where you’ll be five years from now will be found in the quality of books you’ve read.” ~Jim Rohn

What are you reading?

While Jim Rohn mostly talks about books, you can read from other sources too. I joined Medium as a paid member a year ago because I found a lot of quality reading material on the platform.

About six months ago, when Medium changed its partner program form claps to reading time, I knew that the quality will get even better. I also saw an opportunity to contribute and make a difference and adding another profit center to my portfolio.

I wanted to write personal essays with an inspirational message, but initially got sidetracked by the lure of writing what was popular. I was getting burned out after two months. I produced very little because I couldn’t bring myself to write the crap, and my heartfelt stories weren’t doing so well. But, the Universe is always conspiring for you.

Three weeks ago, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz chose me as one of the writers he invited to join his vision of becoming one of the top publications on Medium within the next twelve months. I was honored and humbled. His vision was in synch with my desire with which I started writing here.

Now I have a platform within the Medium platform to express myself. With Dr. Yildiz's knowledge, experience, and leadership #ILLUMINATION is well on its way. We have such a diverse group of super-talented writers in our community that we may never have to go anywhere else to read and grow. Of course, that doesn’t mean we that shouldn’t. How else can we invite more like-minded writers to join our community?

“Most homes valued at over $250,000 have a library. That should tell us something.” ~Jim Rohn

My three takeaways

1. Schooling is not the same thing as education, and formal education is not the same thing as self-education.

2. Reading is the primary source of self-education and with Medium and #ILLUMINATION at our disposal, we are in the driver’s seat.

3. Successful people value books, even in the age of the internet and Kindle. That’s why they always build a library in high-end residences.

Day twelve of the 30-day challenge. My theme: Self-Improvement

As always, thank you for reading. If you liked this, you might also like these.

I am a self-proclaimed weirdo, Jack of Many Trades and Master of Some. I live the Freedom Lifestyle — life on my terms, and help those who are interested in doing the same. (Join the Tribe)

You can let others tell you what it means to be successful, or you can decide it for yourself.”
