3 Reasons You Need To Laugh Everyday

Laughing heals — here’s how

Laughing is medicine. I laugh every day and consider myself to be content in life. Laughing has always healed me — if ever I’m down, I’ll put on a video or think of something funny.

Research shows laughter not only reduces the risk of heart disease but prevents infections and releases endorphins.

Do you want to be happier? Then start to laugh daily! Here are three reasons you need to laugh every day because:

“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.”― Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Laughing is medicine

First and foremost, laughter is a free healer for us all. I am currently reading Choose The Life You Want by Tal Ben-Shahar and was inspired by a story to write this article:

A man in his late forties got severe arthritis and was prescribed a hefty amount of pills by the doctors to survive the pain. To top it off, the doctors said he didn’t have long left to live. He declined to accept this and read up about painful emotions negatively affecting the immune system.

With this in mind, he left the hospital and began to start his treatment through the medicine of laughter every day in his home. From movies to hiring a nurse to read him funny stories, the treatment worked — within weeks, he was back to work and feeling fine.

“Today you find countless studies that illustrate how laughter can alleviate pain and strengthen the immune system.” — Tal Ben-Shahar

Isn’t this story incredibly inspiring?! A man took control and was confident enough to heal his pain with laughter. The best part: it worked!

If that first reason isn’t enough, the second reason to laugh every day is that:

Laughing is contagious

I am a big fan of laughing (if you didn’t guess!) and always laugh; even at myself (it allows you not to take life so seriously!).

The past few weeks have been emotionally challenging for me — going through a break-up and moving places, as well as losing my job. However, finding comfort in my own presence and being alone again has been fulfilling.

I tend to laugh at myself when teaching yoga online. Firstly, because I feel funny when nobody’s camera is on and secondly because sometimes I say the most random of things! You’ll get it when you read this:

Anyway, I wasn’t alone. After teaching a yoga class one day, a student messaged me and said:

“I like the way you conduct the class plus you laugh — not many teachers laugh and I think we need to laugh more these days.”

As you can imagine, this message made my day. It didn’t make me feel too much of a looney for laughing throughout the class — clearly laughing is contagious!

The final reason you need to laugh every day is:

Laughing releases stress

“Laughter is wine for the soul — laughter soft, or loud and deep, tinged through with seriousness — the hilarious declaration made by man that life is worth living.”― Sean O’Casey

Research shows there is a drop in stress levels after a session of laughing, bringing positive changes to our mindset. I can vouch for this. Recently, we’ve all felt heightened levels of stress, and it’s something that is only to be expected with all the world trauma.

However, we can relieve our stress instantly with a good laugh!

I have a particular video that I put on — it never fails to bring me to tears (of joy!). It was a video, my friend and I recorded in India when we had travelled to Delhi. We had just woken up from a nap and had to record this video as a recommendation to send the guy who had given us a tour. We were half asleep and trying to string words together while not being put off by the birds singing. Thinking about it makes me giggle!

What is your video?

So there you have it: three reasons to laugh every day will help your health and well-being! Oh, and laughing is free, so what are you waiting for?!
