3 Things You Need To Know About Online Yoga Classes

Wellness Wednesday: Tips from a daily online yoga teacher

Online yoga is taking over. Research shows more people are turning to yoga virtually during social distancing. With free courses and donation-based classes, the world is getting their fill of fresh energy!

As a yoga teacher, I have been teaching daily online yoga classes for the past two months now — wow, that went quickly! It’s not the same feeling as in the studio (duh), but like anything, it has its pros and cons.

Have you wanted to try classes out online? Well, here are three things you need to know about online yoga classes:

Feel free to show your face

“The face is a picture of the mind with the eyes as its interpreter.” ― Marcus Tullius Cicero

As a yoga teacher, I find it hard to say this politely at times, but please feel free to put your camera on. I understand that you might be in your pyjamas or your room might be messy, but that will make me happy.

We are all human and going through isolation together — some days, I also don’t like the look of my face on the screen — I have to deal with it!

When I teach online without anybody’s camera on, I must say my class isn’t to the best standard. I try my best, but a collective feeling is missing. It took me a few weeks to get used to “talking to myself” when teaching, but with time, like everything, I have submitted to laughing and breathing while I flow and guide.

Think about it: Teaching concerns dynamic and communicational energy. Just as when I taught English, I want to see the faces of my students. The same applies to virtual classes — I want to see your face and be able to adjust you accordingly if your alignment is off or even just see if I am going too fast or slow.

But then again, if you’re new to yoga and want to hide behind the camera — no pressure! The next thing you need to know about online yoga classes is to:

Stay till the end

“Practicing Savasana is a rehearsal for that last breath, that last moment, not in a morbid way, but rather heightening our awareness of our current state of aliveness, and inviting us to live fully.” — Annie Carpenter

When savasana (the end corpse pose in yoga practice) hits, many people disappear. My heart sinks. It is quite a disheartening feeling as a teacher to see people leave before the class has ended, but I understand how people just don’t have the time to give themself this deep relaxation. You deserve it.

Believe it or not, it is the most important pose of the practice.

Research shows savasana is an essential pose, one not to skip. One important reason is that it is the balancer of our nervous system. Think about it: After any exercise, you must relax the body. Savasana does precisely this in many miraculous ways. It allows you to move away from anxiety and permit yourself to notice how you feel — at ease, at peace etc. while lying down on your back and melting every part of your body into the mat.

Once you accept that, remember the most important thing you need to know about online yoga classes is to:

Embrace the class

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” — Buddha

The practise of yoga is all about embracing the present moment. I begin my classes with some breathing and uttering that now is the time to let go of what’s on our minds. It not only helps the class vibration and students but helps me to tune in to teaching and going with the flow as well.

If you are new to yoga, just try to flow with it. It’s hard to be fully drawn into the present moment because our minds drift; it is only normal. However, I take mantras throughout my classes, and it helps a ton to repeat and bring your mind back to focus and concentration.

Embrace the class; accept the moment.

So there you have it: three things you need to know about online yoga classes so you can fully feel the benefits of virtual sanity (Jamiroquai plays in my mind there!). Enjoy it and embrace it.
