3 Queens and 3 Bad Ass Women in Power!
Are you watching these three shows starring women in powerful roles?

I absolutely love it, love it, love it! Call me whatever you want to call me, but I love a good show where the women seem to have all the power. 😄
And that is exactly the case in the three shows I’ve literally gorged on, once I discovered what they were about. Yep! I’ve managed to take binge-watching to a whole other level, when it comes to enjoying my 3 queens.
Let me share a little bit about the shows, and keep in mind, even though they may tend to be on the violent and even risque side, I mainly watch them because of the power they allow the women to have.
In fact, all three of these chicks have so much clout in these shows, that it’s hard to even imagine it being possible, in a real world. But that just goes to show the misleading view that the media has been allowed to cultivate about women.
The reality is: Good, bad, or ugly, women are just as capable of coming into extreme power and being just as calculating and ruthless as any male. And they don’t always have to come by their power by spreading their legs to get it.
That is the main reason why I enjoy watching the 3 shows that I share below, even though I normally enjoy watching sci fi and mysteries.
Although only two of the shows I’m about to mention actually contain the word “queen” in the title, but all three shows contain a queen. Keep reading and you’ll see what I mean.
Queen #1 — The Queen of the South
I only found out recently that Queen of the South is actually an adaptation of a telenovela called: La Reina del Sur. The telenovela was originally adapted from a novel of the same name.
The first queen in MY story is the show’s character: Teresa Mendozaa (played by actress Alice Braga). She’s a poor Mexican woman who becomes wealthy by building a vast drug empire.
Here’s how Flixtor summarizes the show:
“Teresa flees Mexico after her drug-runner boyfriend is murdered. Settling in Dallas she looks to become the country’s reigning drug smuggler and to avenge her lover’s murder.”
The explosive events that occur in her life are depicted in a heartfelt way, including the harsh life she was victim to, involving human trafficking.
In many ways, all 3 queens I’ll be discussing in this story actually have kind hearts, in spite of the lives they ultimately choose to lead. However, not all of them are as mild-mannered and even-tempered as Teresa. She’s the only one who doesn’t appear to enjoy the hurt she has to put on her enemies.
The Queen of the South may blow in like a quiet wind, but honey, don’t underestimate the power of her breeze!
Queen #2 — The Equalizer
In case you’re wondering about the word “queen” missing from the title in my story about queens, don’t fret. My girl Queen Latifah has that on lock.
She’s the rightful queen in this show, so I brought her into the fold for this story, because her character: Robyn McCall fits the bill as a powerful female role.
As if serving her country, being a mom, working full time and helping less fortunate people around the world wasn’t enough to make her a superhero, her job as Equalizer certainly is.
Robyn even creates a post online, advertising to help anyone in need, when the cops and no one else was willing (kind of like the old school A Team). Of course she has her faithful and loyal tight knit crew to help her pull things off successfully.
I love the way she takes the job so seriously, but has to learn to find a balance between work and being a mom to a teenage girl. It’s no easy task! But taking care of bad guys — that just comes naturally to her.
IMDB describes her Equalizer character like this:
“An enigmatic figure who uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn.”
Personally, I describe Robyn as a kickass black woman with a fun disposition. But make no mistake, if you’re on the wrong side of things, she’ll snap you like a tooth pick, and shoot you in a heat beat.
I love this show, and the role of helping people that Queen Latifah is playing. I don’t care how many low ratings the show appears to have on Flixtor.
I suspect that some people who were fans of the original Equalizer don’t appreciate a female now holding down the role, but those folks can suck eggs.
Queen #3 — All the Queen’s Men
OMG! Talk about saving the best for last! No offense to my other two queens, but this queen here tops the charts in my book!
As I already mentioned earlier, all there of these shows have violence, some a little more than others. This one might actually fit that bill.
Instead of drug cartels, and random cases of both high and low profile criminals, the queen in this show is mainly dealing with one type of rival: Anyone that gets in the way of her and her money!
Am I’m making this queen, “Marilyn ‘Madam’ DeVille,” (Eva Marcille) seem ruthless? Then my job here is done.
This is the bio used to describe this show’s self proclaimed royalty:
”Madam is a fierce businesswoman who is at the top of her game in the nightclub industry and surrounded by a band of trusted employees who are down to make sure that she is successful.”
But what this innocent little description fails to mention is that the “band of trusted employees” that madam is surrounded by, are all sexy ass black men who happen to be exotic dancers.
These dancers will make you want to catch a flight to Atlanta and search for Club Eden!

Can you believe they actually call her Madam! “Yes Madam. No Madam.”
Aren’t you just loving this already? But that’s nothing. You should see how she auditions them 😄
This show has it all. Music and dance and sex, oh my! Music and dance and sex, oh my. And of course, as you might imagine, with all that, comes quite a bit of chaos, usually erupting in violence.
And when it does, Madam is there to handle it, sometimes personally; with brass knuckles and all — that’s if she’s not exactly in a shooting mood.
Changing trends in the way women are viewed in entertainment
It’s not hard to miss that there are definitely some changing trends in the way women are now starting to be viewed in entertainment.
As the world and the people in it begin to wake up and form new understandings, society learns to become more accepting of the vast roles that women can and do play.
While some writers and directors are managing to get it right, at least partly, it’s obvious that we still have a ways to go.
It’s hard for me to understand how I can enjoy the above 3 shows so much, when I’m a person that hates violence.
There’s a part of me that knows violence is not an acceptable form of retribution, even in extreme cases.
But then there’s that part of me that simply loves to see a woman in control. Maybe in some ways, it makes me feel a little more powerful (if only in my mind).
More shows are starting to contain stories that empower women

There are a lot of new shows that seem to be taking the route of empowering women more.
One other example, is the show titled: “Y-The Last Man”, which is actually based on the book:
I’ve been watching to see how this story will unfold. It has a great plot and overall theme.
Imagine a story where all the male species on the entire planet ends up dead — well, almost all…
But so far, after watching several episodes, in my opinion, the written description of the show does a better job of describing what they meant the show to be, rather than what it really is.
As it currently stands; for me, the jury is out on this show. I put a pin in it for now, especially since there may not be a second season (Or so I’m told).
The show is described like this:
“Traverse a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. Follow the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.”
Final Thoughts
I hope this brief review of these shows motivate you to check them out and see what you think. I didn’t try to go too deep into the story lines and episodes, because for one thing, I’d probably give a spoiler.
I won’t even try to supply any links for you to view the shows, because there are way too many options, depending if you watch online or on your local cable station. My goal was simply to make you aware of the shows, in case you happened to miss the memo.
If you are already watching any or all of these shows, by all means, feel free to leave your thoughts about the plots, the characters, or anything else related to the shows.
Thanks for reading
