3 Measures of Successful Stories

Views, Earnings, Comments that say you wrote a winner

Photo by Fab Lentz on Unsplash

I have been doing this writing thing for a couple of months now. Even though holding down a day job, in a small apartment, in the middle of a New England winter, I make my writing the highest priority. I have enough stories now to provide a blueprint for how to judge successful stories.

Here’s a Template for how to judge your winning articles. And a Success Quiz at the end.

Views —

My criteria be still a new writer is to hit the 100 view mark per story. I can control this number somewhat by backlinking and posting to Twitter, but it is nice to have followers read it organically.

Comments —

Comments are my lifeblood. They provide the feedback and sense of community to keep on creating for people who benefit from my words. It’s an honor to get 10 new comments per story.

Earnings —

The least important criteria for me. But earnings show traction so they play a role. I know the Medium masterminds are probably throwing pennies at us to keep us coming back — but I love the site so much I can live with that. Right now, if a story earns $1 or more, I feel like I am making progress. Please don’t laugh as I know it is not much but it will grow.

Quality of the Story —

If in my heart of hearts, I know in my heart that I wrote my heart out, then the earnings almost are meaningless. One story that hit home to viewers was one on stopping the anxious, nagging voice in your head. It was a pleasant surprise as I didn’t care about the reception. I just explained an emotional experience in intricate detail. And it hit a human nerve. Check it out here.

Bonus Criteria — Highlighted Stories and David Perlmutter

If David Perlmutter finds your stories and reads them — you have done really well. For those of you who don’t know him, David is a Medium member who highlights great lines in people’s stories. If you are lucky to have David find and read your story, in my book — it is more important than having Medium select your writing for curation.

In summary, views, comments, earnings, and highlights play a role in the criteria of judging a story as a success. But none of these are important as the belief that you wrote a winner.

Success Quiz: 3 quick questions to help move your stories forward. Briefly answer in the comments.

  1. How do you judge the success of your stories?
  2. Are you happy with your progress so far?
  3. What one thing would make your day?

I am grateful to all my loyal readers and the lifelong community we are building together!

This story on Larry the Cat is one that I am most intrinsically proud of:

Shoutouts: Cherie Gaskin Sara Burdick Stephan Moore Dr. Mehmet Yildiz Patrick OConnell Art Bram Michelle Loucadoux, MBA Judy Derby BSc. Ahlam Ben Saga Sreese Sahil Patel Reciprocal Michael L Butler Robin Nemesszeghy
