ASTROLOGY AND CHRISTIANITY

3 Things to Know Now About Astrology

It’s important to know this before checking what the stars are doing

1. Astrology Is Not Fortune Telling

The bible is against fortune telling because nobody can accurately predict the future. The way astrology is seen and represented in the media depicts that astrology is fortune-telling.

People who have little to no knowledge about astrology usually assume it is fortune-telling, forecasting, and predicting the future, but astrology is not about trying to predict what will happen in the future. It’s about using the transits of the stars to prepare for the future.

“And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars.” (Luke 21:25)

There are indeed signs in the sun and the moon and the stars. If you know someone is a cancer zodiac sign, then you can understand why they cry so easily. If you know tonight is a full moon, then you can take it easy on yourself when your emotions are going berserk. When you know Mercury is retrograde, then you can stop and let go when your laptop stays frozen.

Astrology is not a sin, and neither is astronomy nor the weather forecast. They are all knowledge and a form of wisdom made accessible to mankind by God. It’s not a sin when you have your face turned to God and acknowledging him in all your ways. It’s not a sin when you have God and his word in your heart.

“Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.” (Psalm 81:3)

It is God who paints the sunsets and gives the moon its glow. It was he who breathed life into dust to form humankind and the animals. He formed the ocean water, the mountains, and the faraway galaxies. So how is admiring and studying these things a sin?

Astrology is a sin if it makes you turn your back to God. It’s a sin if you are waking up in the morning checking your horoscope before saying your morning prayer. In ancient times, worship of astrology was literal. People worshiped the sun, moon, and stars as gods and even named the planets after Roman gods. It’s a sin if it causes you to make false gods out of the sun and the moon and the stars and worship them.

But times have changed. Astrologers and those with an interest in astrologers don’t think of the planets as items of worship. They see it as an item of study and God’s creation to marvel at. “When I consider Your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon, and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psalms‬ ‭8:3–4‬)

People who have little to no knowledge about astrology assume it’s fortune telling, forecasting, or predicting the future, but astrology is not about trying to predict what will happen in the future. It’s about using the transits of the stars to prepare for the future.

2. Astrology Can Lead You to Sin

“And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.” (Deuteronomy 4:19)

Like so many things on the surface of the earth, astrology can be misused, and that’s the truth.

Astrology can lead you to sin when you idolize or see the stars and planets as some type of god and start praying to them or asking them for help and guidance. “The household gods utter nonsense and the diviners see lies; they tell false dreams and give empty consolation. Therefore, the people wander like sheep.” (Zechariah 10:2)

“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 18:9–12)

But what does the bible mean by divination?

Divination is to foresee, foretell, predict, prophesy, or be inspired by a god. It is the attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by occult means or rituals. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him (James 1:5)

Any kind of activity that attempts to contact spirits is very risky and dangerous. You risk opening yourself up to bad spirits that may come into your mind and lead you astray. Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them (Leviticus 19:31)

Astrology can lead you to sin when you idolize or see the stars and planets as some type of god.

3. Listen to Your Heart When You’re Not Sure

Personally, astrology is a gateway to the heavens. It allows you to have a sneak peek into the stars. I look to the stars, not because my strength comes from the stars. I look to the stars because my help comes from God, the One who made heaven and earth and the stars.

When I first had my spiritual awakening, my relationship with God wasn't the best. I didn't pray unless I was in trouble and I never read the bible. It was through astrology that I found myself. It was through astrology that I found my way, and it was through astrology that I found my way back to God, and my relationship with him is much stronger now.

And now I barely look to the stars for guidance. I can go directly to my father in heaven and boldly ask for what I need. Astrology was my gateway to God and I never feel as if I've sinned. I've asked God to search my heart and my mind to reveal my sinful ways, but astrology has never felt sinful.

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts. (Proverbs 21:2) If something doesn’t feel right in your heart, it’s wrong, even if it doesn't feel wrong for the next person. Different people practice astrology differently.

If you know it in your heart that God is King and he lives there and you have idolized nothing, then let no man make you feel bad. Only God can judge you. “Therefore, let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.” (Colossians 2:16)

It was through astrology that I found my way, and it was through astrology that I found my way back to God, and my relationship with him is much stronger now.
