Summary

Akku Yadav, a notorious criminal known for a series of heinous crimes including rape, murder, and extortion, particularly targeting the lower caste in Kasturba Nagar, was brutally killed by a group of over 200 women in a courtroom in Nagpur, India, after years of police inaction and complicity.

Abstract

Akku Yadav, a gangster from Nagpur, India, terrorized the residents of Kasturba Nagar for 13 years with his relentless criminal activities, which included rape, murder, extortion, and kidnapping. His victims, primarily lower-caste women and girls, suffered in silence due to threats and a lack of police intervention, as the local authorities were bribed to ignore his crimes. The situation began to change when Usha Narayane, an educated woman from the untouchable class, dared to stand up against Yadav by filing a complaint, inspiring others to follow suit. Eventually, the oppressed women, unable to endure the thought of Yadav's continued reign of terror, took justice into their own hands. On August 13, 2004, they stormed the courtroom where Yadav was due to be released on bail, and in a shocking act of retribution, they stabbed him to death and mutilated his body, marking a significant moment of empowerment for the community.

Opinions

  • The author portrays Akku Yadav as a monstrous figure, highlighting the depth of his depravity and the impunity with which he operated due to police corruption and societal indifference.
  • The article suggests that the lack of legal recourse for the victims, stemming from systemic corruption and societal prejudice against the lower castes, left vigilante justice as the only viable option for the oppressed community.
  • The bravery of Usha Narayane is emphasized as a turning point, showcasing the power of education and the impact of a single individual's courage to challenge the status quo.
  • The collective action of the women in the courtroom is presented as both a spontaneous outburst of long-suppressed rage and a deliberate act to protect their community from future harm by Yadav.
  • The incident is framed as a poignant example of the failure of the justice system and the extreme measures individuals are driven to when the state fails to protect its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.
  • The aftermath of Yadav's death is depicted as a moment of triumph and celebration for the community, with the women's actions being seen as a form of poetic justice, despite the legal implications of their vigilantism.

Residing in Nagpur, Akku Yadav was everything you can think of — a gangster, home invader, robber, kidnapper, serial rapist, serial killer, extortionist, and whatnot?

This local goon owned a colorful history in the crime world, where his earliest crime was a 1991 gang rape. His unforgiving activities lasted for 13 years in Kasturba Nagar.

As young as 12 years old, he dragged girls to a nearby old building for gang-raping — forcing nearly 25 families to leave the town. Some from untouchable classes could not afford to move, so they withdrew their daughters from the schools and locked them in the house — so no one could ever see them.

The terror of Yadav crime was so expansive that even vegetable vendors would avoid visiting Kasturba Nagar, making it harder for the local housewife to buy food.

Additionally, Yadav’s primary source of income was extortion, for which he would kill anyone who resisted. Creating a small business empire, Yadav harmed and threatened people who dared to argue. He mainly targeted the lower caste, the untouchables, as they could not raise a voice against him.

Interestingly, despite always being surrounded by a herd of goons, precisely with the pack of other dogs, he was always afraid of being killed. His worry peaked to the extent that he objected to public gatherings, fretting people might plot against him.

The restriction of men and women gathering together was not enough. He extended the showcase of his insecurity by restricting young boys to play, threatening them of breaking their games.

Let’s see in detail what types of hideous crimes Yadav actually committed, which accounted for the level of insecurity the monster possessed and ultimately his unmerciful death.

Unimaginable List of Crimes

Women remained silent for 13 years, as he silenced them with a rape threat — indeed horrifying because he raped more frequently and casually compared to murder.

He had been raping the same local low-caste women for over a decade, a fact enough to send chills down the spine. He allegedly raped women in nearly every other house in Kasturba Nagar slum, precisely over 40 women — where the youngest victim was a 10-year girl.

  • A rape incident panned out when Yadav attacked a couple in their own house. Lying he was a police officer, Yadav knocked aggressively on the door of the couple’s home. As soon as the door opened, he stabbed his husband’s thigh with a knife and locked him in the bathroom. Targeting the wife, he dragged her by the hair to a different place where he raped her and then released her after four hours.
  • Another woman name Kalma was raped after ten days of giving birth. Unable to bear the burden of her helplessness and shame, she committed suicide by burning herself with kerosene and lighting — again, Yadav was responsible for orphaning ten days old.
  • This nameless creature’s brutality did not end; he further tortured women in public — in front of the whole family. One such case is of Asho Bhagat, whose breasts were cut off in front of her daughter and several neighbors. Slicing her body up, he killed her. Several people witnessed his merciless act, but only one person, Avinash Tiwari, dared to voice against him — he too, ultimately, met with an unfortunate fate of getting butchered by Yadav.
  • Another public violence took place when Yadav pulled a seven-month pregnant woman and stripped her naked in front of the road, raping her.
  • Apart from his terrifying raping history, he owned a murder record. He had, at least, murdered three people, dumping their bodies on railway tracks. Moreover, Yadav murdered Asha Bai in front of her 16-year-old granddaughter. That 16 years old stated they were having dinner when Yadav came to the house. Lying he was her brother’s friend, Yadav made Asha Bai open the door. As soon as the door got opened, he dragged and stabbed Asha. The brutality was not enough as he cut off her ears for the earrings and fingers for the rings.

What was the law doing in all these scenarios?

Well, police were accomplices in all these crimes — after all, they were fed with cash to remain shut. The 32-year-old was in protection because he bribed local officers with drinks and other luxuries.

Rape is a Taboo. It is not easy to admit being raped, especially in India, but dozens of victims reported the crime, yet Yadav was never charged.

Reports were registered against rape, but police justified Yadav’s acts by accusing the women themselves. When a 22-year girl reported being raped, the police accused her of having an affair with Yadav. They only laughed and abused the raped women, characterizing them as loose.

In short, police officers did not have any problem as long as Yadav tortured people of the untouchable class —Dalits, the lowest class in India’s caste system.

A Glistening Ray of Hope

Indeed, education gives confidence to voice injustice no matter what — a fact reiterated through Narayane’s audacity.

Usha Narayane, an untouchable, completed her Diploma in hotel management. The literacy rate among women in Kasturba Nagar was meager. Instead of getting her married off early, decided to educate her thus penned d high hopes from her.

She entered the picture when Yadav and the gang tortured Narayane’s neighbor, demanded money, smashed their furniture, and threatened to murder the family.

Narayane asked her neighbor to set off for the police station, but she refused, so Narayane went instead and complained against Yadav. Hearing about the complaint, Yadav and his gang of 40 people surrounded Narayane’s house, threatening to throw acid on Narayane’s face if she did not withdraw the complaint.

The gang tried to break the door upon which Narayane took a brilliant move and turned on the gas cylinder, warning them of lighting the house on fire with a match and blowing herself with everyone who would come in. Smelling the gas, the criminals left Narayane alone.

This was the ray of hope for the entire village. Hearing about the audacity which Narayane exhibit, victim women turned willing to go after Yadav.

Angry Dalits began hurling stones on Yadav’s associates and even burnt Yadav’s house down. Fearing his own life, Yadav sought police protection and got himself arrested.

Yadav’s Final Countdown

Yadav’s hearing was just a formality, as he was to get bail anyway. Predicting injustice, women decided to act. But none of them planned Yadav’s fate. Instead, it was an emotional outburst of a decade, where women preferred to go to prison over enduring Yadav’s release.

They could not bear even the thought of him terrorizing them again. Thus, on the day of his hearing, at 3 pm on August 13, 2004, nearly 200 women with vegetable knives and chili powder entered the courtroom.

Yadav had ample confidence in the police’s protection — thus, even at that time, the devil didn’t stop spreading the disgust. Recognizing one of the women he raped in the courtroom, he called her a prostitute, threatening to rape her further again.

Police broke into laughter, but within a second, their laughter was silenced by the very woman’s flying sandal panned at Yadav’s head. She shouted, “We can’t both live on this Earth together. It’s you or me.”

It was the moment of attack.

Two officers protecting him fled in terror. Stones were hurled, chiillpowder was thrown, 70 stabs were left on his body, and his penis was hacked with a vegetable knife. Within 15 minutes, a man who terrorized the town was murdered in Nagpur district court. This extraordinary event boldly took place, not in a narrow alley or dark slum, but fearlessly in a government building by the courageous public.

The incident making the headlines in every paper was a shameful realization for the authorities who couldn’t protect the vulnerable. Yadav’s murdered flipped the narrative of whose voice was powerful.

Towards the Justice

After killing Yadav, women returned to Kasturba Nagar, telling their fathers and husbands of a milestone they have achieved towards freedom from tyranny— the slum danced with joy. Celebration with music and food made it no lesser than a festival.

Eventually, For taking the law into their own hands, five women were arrested but released later.

Narayane was accused of plotting the whole murder and arrested for planning, even though she wasn’t even in court. Upon Demonstrations across the city and lack of evidence, every accused was eventually released.

No single person was punished for the Yadav’s murder as every woman living in the slum claimed murder’s responsibility. It was either the arrest of none or all.

The rape crime was given poetic justice when nearly 200 women stabbed him to death, hacking his penis.
