2 Nasty Words: Diet and Discipline

Your butt can be on any diet in the world, but if you’re not disciplined, you won’t see results!

Yes, I know, another diet related story in Medium. But, you need to ask yourself this….

Why Am I Reading It?

-Could it be because I want to see what the newest diet trend is? -Maybe it’s because the diet I’m not just isn’t working. -Could it be I’m bored and wanted to read something else? -Maybe it’s because this author is a cool dude and I love reading his stuff!

Whatever brought you to this story, you’ve decided to read it, right? So, lets get started!

First of all, as I said earlier,

Your Butt Can Be On Any Diet In The World, But If You’re Not Disciplined, You Won’t See Results!

We’ll start out be talking about DISCIPLINE.

What does being disciplined mean? Well, dictionary.com defines it as: “train oneself to do something in a controlled and habitual way.”

So, you have to train yourself to do something until it becomes a natural habit. A good example is tying your shoes. When is the last time you actually THOUGHT about tying your shoes? You just slip them on and tie. You don’t think about HOW to tie them, you just do.

So, the key is, to be disciplined at something, you have to do it without thinking of it. I’m doing it right now while typing this story. Oh sure, I’m thinking about the words, but I’m not thinking about my fingers on the keyboard typing out those words. It’s automatic. That’s what discipline is.

Got it? Great, let’s move on.

Now, what about the word DIET? What does that word mean?

Our buddies at dictionary.com say it means: the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. AND ALSO: a special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons.

Some people see that word and right away think of it in a negative way.

-I can’t eat that, I’m on a diet? -I hate the taste of diet soda! -If it weren’t for this diet I’m on, I’d eat another piece of cake!

But diet doesn’t have to be negative. They can be positive.

-This new diet I’m on makes me feel GREAT! -I’ve lost 22lbs with the diet I’m following! -I never knew this diet food tastes so good!

Which way do you see the word “diet”? Positive or Negative.

Regardless, it is what it is, right?

Now let’s think about putting the two words together: Diet and Discipline.

Two reasons people want to be on a diet, notice I didn’t say NEED to be on a diet, are to 1) Lose weight and 2)Bulk up their body.

Both of these result in your body changing in some way, right? You’ll either get bigger or get smaller, so to speak.

Will just dieting alone get you either of these results? Well maybe, but we can debate that all day long, and there’s actually a LOT more to it, but that’s not what this article is about.

The main thing is you have to be focused on knowing what you want from your diet. That focus can be thought of as your DISCIPLINE! (see how I’m tying everything all together?)

You’ll have to control and train yourself to follow certain guidelines and/or restrictions to achieve the results you want.

In other words, you’ll probably have some sort of workout or activities to go along with the particular diet you’re following.

But, here’s the key, you have to actually do these activities consistently! Chances are for an extended period of time. Then, and only then, will you see long term results. Which, by the way, is the ultimate goal, to have LASTING results, isn’t it?
