Do You Have A Fat Dog?
If you look closely enough, dogs can tell you a lot about their owners.
A good friend of mine, who is also the internet’s very first Virtual Personal Trainer, once told me…
If you have a fat dog, you’re not getting enough exercise.
Was it harsh to say? Maybe. Was it cruel to say? I don’t believe so. Was it meant to be mean? Nope, not at all. Was it the truth? Probably, but that’s something each individual who has a dog needs to answer.
What does “if you have a fat dog, you’re not getting enough exercise” mean? For those who don’t understand it, I’ll break it down into easy to understand concepts.
Concept #1
You need to have a dog who lives in the house with you. I say it this way because growing up, we had hunting dogs which lived outside in dog pens, or kennels as others may call it. So, some people have dogs that do not live in the house.
Oh, and just so people don’t get the wrong idea about our dogs, they were treated great! They were fed and had fresh water several times a day. Let out of their pens to run around every day. Taken on hunting trips several times a year. So, I don’t want to hear from my friends at PITA, ok?
Concept #2
A dog which lives in a house has to get taken outside to relieve itself periodically. If the dog is fed and given water on a regular basis, then just like humans, the dog needs to relieve itself several times a day as well.
Concept #3
If done properly, when the dog is ready to relieve itself, it’s usually a human who takes the dog, which is on a leash, out of the house for this relief (if this doesn’t happen, there may be a smell in the house which isn’t pleasant).
Concept #4
When a dog is taken for a walk, what else has to happen? A HUMAN has to be walking with the dog! After all, a dog on a leash without a human is probably a lost dog, which is another story for another time.
Most dogs LOVE to go for walks, even if that dog doesn’t need to relieve itself. Taking your dog for a walk is always good to do! It should happened several times a day.
Concept #5
When a human goes for a walk, the human body has to engage in movement. What is this movement considered? Exercise! The more you walk, the more exercise you get.

So now, let’s put all five of these concepts together.
You have a dog living inside your home.
You give this dog food and water. Which means the dog has to relieve itself on a periodic basis. In other words, the dog has to go to the bathroom!
It’s better for the dog to use the bathroom outside of the house rather than inside the house.
When the dog is taken outside, the dog should be on a leash with the other end of the leash attached to a human.
If the dog walks, the human should walk as well.
When the human walks, that human is exercising. What does exercising do? It causes calories to burn in the human body. Which, in theory, causes the human body to lose fat.
Since this calorie burning concept goes to dogs as well, it means when a dog is walking, it’s burning calories too. A dog which burns calories usually isn’t overweight.
So, if you followed all of this, it means if the dog is walked regularly, the human also is walking regularly and, therefore, is exercising.
If the dog is fat, there is no exercising involved. From this, I’ll let you draw your own conclusion about what that human may look like.
And, just to remind you of the saying, “If you have a fat dog, you’re not getting enough exercise.”
Now, does that make sense? Can you chuckle when you read it now? I know I still can!
