15 Years Later, Was It Juju or a Ghost?

Remembering the time we were robbed.

Mom's scream shook the house.

“What the heck!” I said, jolting to consciousness, my phone falling off my hands and crashing into the floor.

It felt like 10 minutes ago that I dozed off. “So, what could be the cause of this ruckus?” I thought.

“Mummy…. Wetin' happen?” Itams, my cousin, yelled from his room. I hurried to my feet, grabbed my phone from the floor, and darted to Mom's room, where Itams already stood aghast.

What I saw was shocking. And my drowsiness vanished instantly.

The window's iron shield had a large gaping hole.

There’s been a break-in. A serious one. And half of Mom’s stuff has been stolen. The terrifying question was, how?

Thoughts raced through my mind. My eyes bulged from their sockets. We were all in shock. I wasn’t that deep in sleep. I merely dozed off. Surely, I’d awaken to even a whisper. How was it possible that such a break-in was done without anyone hearing a single sound?

Worse yet, Mom was asleep three feet away. Her room shared a thin wall with the room that was broken into. And the door separating both rooms was opened.

Unfathomable!

My Mom wailed! It took half an hour to calm her down. Leaving her with my sister, I and Itams scanned the compound.

By the edge of the fence, were footprints — indicating how they got in; they’d scaled the fence.

“These are strong men!” Itams declared.

A thought it seemed he couldn’t hide any longer.

“This isn’t ordinary. You can’t tear down an iron protector without making a sound.” He continued. “While someone slept three feet away, and make away with bags of clothes, money, and other items.”

“E nor impossible.” He lamented.

We gaped at each other, both knowing what the other was thinking. “They used juju!!??”

“Obviously!!”

It wasn’t hard to accept, though. I knew it was clearly obvious. But I struggled to accept that, though they had used extraordinary means, I fell for it.

It’s no news young men use dark powers to support their criminal or nefarious acts. At about this time, there were rumors of similar break-ins. But as is common with people and unfortunate circumstances, we didn’t believe it’d happen to us.

15 years after, I’m still lamenting and whining about it.

Fifteen years after, I’m as confused as I was that night. How did they cut open iron bars, walk past my Mom, and make away with a good amount of items?

How they pulled this off, 15 years later, is still beyond me.
