Some of them may even have a butterfly effect on your life

Often we find ourselves searching for a whole new remedy to our problems in the external world. But the fact is, the solution to our problem lies within ourselves.

Sometimes a lot of problems in our lives take place due to our bad habits, which we have developed over time. Though it’s too difficult to get rid of the old habits, it is very much possible to build up some new habits to tackle the old ones. And maybe in the process you get rid of some of the bad old habits too.

Following are 12 simple but effective habits that can help you change your life for good. Who knows, some of them may even have a butterfly effect on your life.

1. Uncomfortable experiences

Get out of your comfort zone. Do something that challenges your body or mind, as simple as running if you don’t run. In the course, you’ll meet new people, maybe figure out a new passion, and most importantly, you’ll learn a lot of new things about yourself.

2. Exceed expectations

Just completing the bare minimum requirement may make you lazy. At least, according to my experience. Doing above and beyond expectations in everything you do will help you exceed in every aspect of your life.

3. Perpetual punctuality

Do you think that your time is more important than others? I don’t think that time for someone else would be less important than it is for me. If you agree with me then why would you bother to make someone wait for you? Be it an interview, meeting, or a date. Being punctual helps you make a better impression on everyone you meet.

4. Go for it

I don’t think you just want to wait and let someone else decide when you’ll get something you want. Just don’t wait around for it, no one is ever going to know what you’re thinking, moreover, they don’t even care for your success as much as you do. Play an active role in your success. Sometimes just asking for something you want makes all the difference.

5. 30 minutes for your mess

How often do you clean your living and working space? I can’t live in an untidy space, forget about the work. Just spend 30 minutes of your day cleaning up your mess and you’ll see the difference in your life and work quality. The following article by Diksha Agarwal will help you manage your stuff like a minimalist.

6. Get physically active

An average U.S. adult sits for around 6.5 hours a day. And for teenagers, it is around 8–9 hours a day. Research has shown that sedentary behavior can lead to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more. If you still aren’t ready to take care of your body, I don’t know what will motivate you.

7. Acknowledge your growth

Do you feel like “I am working so hard to improve myself, why am I not seeing any result?” Probably you may have come across some changes but you weren’t able to recognize them because they were too small as compared to the efforts you are putting in. Most changes are small and incremental. You are always getting closer to your goal, though little by little. So always remember to acknowledge your success.

8. No caffeine in the evening

I can’t stress the importance of sleep. Caffeine has a half-life of up to 5 hours and I don’t need to tell you how adversely caffeine can affect your sleep. So try to make a habit of not drinking caffeine in the evening.

9. Sleep ready environment

Can you have a good night’s sleep in a bright, noisy, or warm room? At least, I can’t. If you can spend some time preparing your environment for you to fall asleep, like lowering down the temperature and making sure the room is quiet and dark, you can easily guarantee yourself a good 7–8 hours of sleep.

10. Non-productive happiness

We all know that cutting off the world’s disturbance can make us all a lot productive. But the non-productive social life is very important too, especially for your individual happiness. A long phone call with your parent or partner or spending a weekend with loved ones doesn't seem productive but they are crucial for your mental well-being. And that’s what makes them invaluable.

11. Charitable gratitude

Helping people, be it as a donation or volunteering for a task, is a humbling and gratifying experience. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and a warm fuzzy feeling of doing something good. Sometimes it also helps you realize the gifts you have in your life that you might have taken for granted.

12. Express your affection

How do you think someone you love a lot would know that you really love them and care for them? Sometimes a simple gesture like gift-giving, appreciating, and thanking are the things your loved ones would crave for. Let them know that you really care for them.

So those were the 12 simple habits that have changed my life for good and I hope will help you improve yours too.
