11 Ways I’ve Created Job-Free Income for Myself

Photo by Tetiana SHYSHKINA on Unsplash

I never thought I’d be in this boat, today. I always thought I’d be working for a company, tucked away in an office, working 8 to 5. Although there was always a longing in me to be an entrepreneur, I didn’t connect the dots until I was around 5 years into my last corporate job.

When I finally realized that I could run my own business, I put together a plan, executed it, and less than 2 years later, I was earning enough money from my company to support my family and I quit!

Since then, my business has transformed many times.

Today, I earn income from 11 different income streams. Here’s a look into the 11 ways I’ve created job-free income for myself.

11 job-free income sources that support me

There are many income streams out there. They are NOT all a good fit, believe me.

I’ve tested and trialed so many different things. Some things work, and others don’t.

The 11 job-free income sources that feed me and my family are:

  1. Ebook income
  2. Course income
  3. Writing platforms
  4. Client work
  5. Content creation
  6. Sponsored content
  7. Sponsored links
  8. Affiliate marketing
  9. Investment income
  10. Amazon KDP
  11. Online gigs

Let’s take a look at how they work and how I started with them.

1. Selling ebooks

This is about writing, publishing, and selling ebooks. Ebooks are incredibly easy to create. I’ve created them for myself and for clients. You can literally bundle a handful of blog posts together and call it an ebook!

If you’re knowledgeable about a topic, you can teach what you know in an ebook.

I have three ebooks, and I’m finalizing a fourth one.

How I sell ebooks?

I use the Gumroad platform. I’ve used other selling platforms in the past but, I’ve had a lot of success with Gumroad and I really like it.

2. Selling courses

This is like a longer version of an ebook. With a course, you can make it really interactive, adding video, voice notes, audio recordings, etc. You can make a workbook to go along with the course, create a Facebook group or community for students, etc.

Making and selling courses is hard work.

There was a time when people were really going nuts making courses. And many creators were making a ton of money!

That was never me but, I have always earned money from the courses that I’ve run for several years now.

How I sell courses?

I create and sell courses using Teachable. Teachable is easy to use and has a great interface that’s beginner-friendly. You can set up coupon codes, design a sales page, and more.

You can see my courses here.

3. Writing on platforms

I’m on a couple different writing platforms that make me money. Those are Medium and Newsbreak.

I’ve tried Vocal and Simily and others before but, Medium and Newsbreak are my bread and butter.

How I make money writing on platforms?

I write content that I know about and like. I try to be as consistent as possible. I earn from the platform itself and sometimes I plug my products and affiliate links, which earn me some money too.

4. Client work

Last month I talked about quitting clients.

I did, except for my writing clients.

So, I make money from writing blog posts for these clients and it’s been a steady income stream for some time.

How to make money with clients?

Getting clients can be done through word of mouth, networking, applying to writing jobs, and posting your content on LinkedIn and other places online.

Here are my favorite places to find freelance writing gigs.

5. Content creation

This is UGC work. I get contacted and I pitch for UGC work, which involves filming short videos for brands.

My first long-term UGC deal just ended recently. It was paying me a few thousand dollars a month.

How to do UGC?

You can set up a Fiverr account with UGC gigs. You can also apply to UGC opportunities.

I personally use CreatorX, Creobase, and Brands Meet Creators.

I also try to post my business email online where I hang out (Medium, Twitter, TikTok, etc.) and that’s how a lot of my clients find me and reach out.

6. Sponsored content

I have over 500K social media followers across multiple networks. I do sponsored posts for those social media accounts.

You can also make money through sponsored content via your email newsletter, as a writer, etc. Lots of opportunities as a creator.

How to make money with sponsored content?

Apply to opportunities. You can join sponsored post networks like Izea or Activate and apply to opportunities. Posting your email address publicly can help brands find and contact you. And, pitching!

I’ve pitched about a dozen brands this week so far and am actively talking to about 2 to 3 of them.

The hour I spent researching those companies and contacting them could result in up to $6K to $10K in revenue for me!

Learn more in my free brand deal course.

7. Sponsored links

This is super similar to sponsored content but, instead of a full sponsored post, you can just sell a link.

I get contacted for these less frequently but, I booked one of these deals just recently.

It’s literally just an insertion order.

For example, a company could email you to ask to link to them in a popular post on your blog. They pay you for that sponsored link.

How to make money with sponsored links?

The same way as with sponsored content. I don’t see these opportunities advertised in sponsored networks but, you can post your email address online (in places where you’re active) in hopes of brands contacting you and you can pitch for this, as well.

8. Affiliate marketing

I’ve been doing affiliate marketing off and on for years. It wasn’t until the last year or so that I started earning a full-time income from it!

What changed?

I started promoting high-ticket affiliate offers.

Instead of promoting my usual $2 to $5 commission offers, my offers are now worth $100 to $500 each.

How many $5 commissions do you need to make $3,000?

And, how many $200 commissions do you need to make $3,000?

It’s the same effort, just a different offer. And, more money!

How to make money with affiliate marketing?

Join affiliate programs and promote your links. You can do Medium affiliate marketing, Pinterest affiliate marketing, solo ads, and other ways.

9. Investment income

I joined M1 Finance. I set an auto deposit that puts money into my investment account and I earn interest and dividends. Easy.

How to make money from investments?

There are so many different ways this works. I am not a financial advisor and this is not financial advice. Make sure to consult with your financial advisor if you want to look into ways to make money from investments.

10. Amazon KDP

I got into low-content publishing and created some low-content books that sold!

I’m not making a lot of money with this but, it’s totally passive.

How to make money from Amazon KDP?

Write and publish books on the platform. There are a ton of educational resources on YouTube and other places where you can learn strategies for free.

If this interests you, I’d soak up as much free knowledge and information as possible and then, dive into the process!

11. Online gigs

My Fiverr gigs! I have a small Fiverr presence that’s made me around $1,800+ since I joined the platform as a seller.

Jenn Leach Fiverr

When I restarted with Fiver in 2021, I was earning a steady $300 to $400 a month.

It was great!

I make a lot less now but, I still get gig orders every now and then. It’s not passive but, it only takes 10 to 20 minutes to fulfill the gig order for around $100 income per gig. Not bad.

Bottom line

Job-free income is powerful.

A 9-to-5 job is not the only way to make a living. Having 11 different income streams might sound insane to some but, I am living the life I want. I have freedom and flexibility and I earn a lot more than I ever did in my corporate job.
