Summary

The web content describes four types of individuals characterized by their life circumstances, actions, and the resulting consequences in the afterlife according to Buddhist teachings.

Abstract

The passage outlines a Buddhist perspective on the trajectory of human lives, categorizing individuals into four archetypes based on their socioeconomic background, physical appearance, moral conduct, and the karmic outcomes they experience after death. The first type represents those born into difficult conditions who engage in negative actions, leading to further suffering in the next life. The second type overcomes an initial challenging life through virtuous behavior, ascending to a better state after death. The third type, born into privilege but behaving immorally, falls into misery post-death. The fourth and final type combines fortunate birth with ethical living, ensuring a continuation of their prosperous circumstances into the next life.

  • The text conveys a strong emphasis on the moral quality of one's actions as a determinant of future destiny, regardless of one's initial life conditions.

  • The narrative encourages the reader to consider the long-term consequences of their actions, promoting ethical behavior and personal responsibility.

“O Monks, there are these four types of persons found existing in the world. What are these four? The one heading from darkness to darkness, the one heading from darkness to light, the one heading from light to darkness, and the one heading from light to light.

“How is a person heading from darkness to darkness? This person has been reborn in a low family, one that is poor, with little food and drink, that subsists with difficulty; and he is unsightly and with much illness. And he engages in misconduct by body, speech, and mind. In consequence, after death he is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination. It is in this way that a person is heading from darkness to darkness.

“How is a person heading from darkness to light? This person has been reborn in a low family, one that is poor, with little food and drink, that subsists with difficulty; and he is unsightly and with much illness. Yet he engages in good conduct by body, speech, and mind. In consequence, after death he is reborn in the plane of happiness, in a good destination. It is in this way that a person is heading from darkness to light.

“How is a person heading from light to darkness? This person has been reborn in a high affluent family, one that is rich, with great wealth and property; and he is handsome, attractive, graceful. Yet he engages in misconduct by body, speech, and mind. In consequence, after death he is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination. It is in this way that a person is heading from light to darkness.
