10 Uncomfortable Truths You Have To Accept ASAP
I wish I knew these things when I was 18. It would have made my life so much easier.
Over the past few years, I have gone through some shaping events. Major health problems, breakup, and the death of a family member.
These things have led me to think about my life a lot. I have realized several things that I think can make our lives better if we are aware of them and accept them.
I may have called these things “truths” in the title. But who am I to determine what the truth is. These things are at least my truth and I hope that they can help you.
Everything In Your Life Is Your Responsibility
When you take responsibility for everything in your life you take your fate into your own hands and say no to the victim mentality.
Even if something is not your fault, but it affects your life, you should take responsibility. We should never confuse responsibility and guilt.
If you get sick, it is usually not your fault. However, you must take responsibility and do the things that can make you well again.
If an old lady collapses in front of you, it is certainly not your fault, but it is your responsibility to help her.
Thinking Like The 99% Won’t Get You 1% Results
This point applies to everyone who wants to get the best out of their life. If you are satisfied with an average life you can skip this one.
All right, you’re still reading. I assume you want a job that fulfills you, freedom over your life and your time. You probably also want enough money to travel where you want and to do the things you want
I assume most people want that. But very few have it. Find the mistake. It seems like conventional wisdom about career paths and financial decisions don’t lead to the dream destination.
I guess conventional wisdom will not bring you any exceptional results.
You Will Lose Friends
Especially when you evolve you will lose friends. For example, friends you were always drinking and partying with probably won’t be thrilled about you spending more time on your personal development and going out less. Or, God forbid, even stop drinking alcohol.
Misery loves company.
Health Is Everything
Or to put it more precisely: without health, everything is nothing. You have only this one body. Do you want to poison it every weekend with alcohol and weed or do you want to take good care of it with a healthy diet and sports so that it lasts as long as possible? Your choice. And your responsibility.
Prioritizing our health is not easy nowadays, in a time when the big corporations of our world are profiting from our unhealthy pleasures.
Think about it: Netflix’s biggest competition is sleep. Coca-Cola’s biggest competition is water. The pharmaceutical industry’s biggest competition is healthy eating and exercise. Mc Donald’s biggest competition is also healthy eating.
Bad Things Will Happen
Sooner or later, fate is likely to strike you. You may get sick, you may lose your job, your relationship may break up, and family members may die. You should expect that. And these things will not be in your control.
You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength. — Marcus Aurelius
Life Is Not Fair
Unfortunately, life is not fair. We have to deal with it, I guess.
Yes, what family you grew up in and what you look like will influence your life. Yes, money rules the world. Yes, tall men are more attractive are generally speaking more attractive and earn more money.
These and countless other injustices unfortunately exist. But there is nothing you can do about it. That’s why it’s probably best to accept them and even if you are personally affected by some of these injustices, to make the best of your life.
Problems Never Stop
“If I have a girlfriend, I will be happy.” “When I have a million dollars in my bank account, I will be happy.”
Such ways of thinking should be avoided. We tend to assume that we only have to solve the one big problem in our lives until we can be happy. The problem: problems never end. Instead, we must learn to be happy despite our problems.
In his book, “The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck,” Mark Manson sums it up nicely:
Problems never stop; they merely get exchanged and/or upgraded.
Your Partner Is Not Yours. It Is Just Your Turn.
A relationship can go on the rocks. You have no right to stay together with your partner. He/ she is not yours. No matter what you have promised each other. Your partner could change his mind at any time and you could not do anything about it.
In this respect, you should as well focus only on what you can control: being the best version of yourself. Being so good that your partner could not replace you.
You Will Die
Time is the great equalizer. Time is more important than money. Because we all have only a certain amount of it. We are all going to die.
If we make ourselves aware of this every now and then, we will probably waste less time on meaningless things and concentrate more on the important things. For me, the thought of my mortality is extremely motivating in a way.
Because the clock is ticking. Can you hear it?
Some Things Can’t Be Bought
Even if you have managed to be in a good financial position, there are some things you need to earn. Even the richest person in the world has to. You can’t buy really valuable things like a healthy body and good interpersonal relationships.
