1 Million Covid-19 Cases and Coronavirus Spikes in England Spark New Lockdown
Should the U.S. Follow Suit with over 9 Million Cases?
UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will announce England’s second lockdown this year after surpassing 1 million coronavirus cases in the country. This is in anticipation of a higher death toll than was seen with the first wave.
The 4-week lockdown is scheduled to begin in the UK on November 5 and expected to end December 2.
Restriction Details
Non-essential shops, pubs, restaurants, and churches will be ordered to close and foreign travel will be banned. Schools and universities will, however, be open. Domestic travelling will be restricted to only as needed such as for work, obtaining supplies, childcare, or healthcare.
Another restriction is that people mixing and mingling with other people outside of their households will be outlawed — how they propose to enforce that is a mystery to me.

What about the U.S. with almost 10 million cases?
As of the time of this writing, the coronavirus case count in the United States is 9.13 million!
It appears that lockdowns are sporadic across the U.S., left up to individual counties in various states, unlike in the UK.
Predictions from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation are that deaths in the U.S. could TRIPLE by mid-January and reports that “increased mask use can still save lives”.
It’s apparent to me that another lockdown is needed.
COVID-19 R0
The R0 (R-naught) is the reproduction number that rates how a contagious disease spreads, and it denotes how many people one infected person can infect with a disease.
The R0 for COVID-19 is 2–3, which means that, on average, one person will spread the coronavirus to at least 2–3 other people, if no mitigation to stop the spread is taken.
Just to put it into perspective, a 1000-case scenario for only up to a 1.1 R0 would result in 1,000 cases turning into 25,000 from 0.5 RO to 1.1RO.
This is scary.
I know it would be hard to tough out, but I am all for another lockdown for at least 4 weeks. But so many people are against it and probably would not comply, even with warnings from health officials that new outbreaks will happen when restrictions are eased too soon or not in place at all.
