Doug Christie來自西雅圖，高中及大學時已薄有名氣，所以能以首圈第17選被超音速選上；自家英雄加盟在地球隊，理所當然；可是街波出身的他，因為合約問題，結果一次都未穿過綠色球衣，就被交易到湖人。當時排名在Doug之後的Tracy Murray，簽下年薪72.5萬美元的合約，而名氣更響的Doug，就要求雙倍人工、130萬的年薪，結果雙方拉鋸了一段時間，去到93年2月，超音速終於行使其選秀權，但就不是讓他落場，而是把他和Benoit Benjamin送到湖人，換來大前鋒Sam Perkins。

“The Sonics have really left a bitter taste in my mouth,” Christie said prior to the 1992–93 NBA season. “It’s kind of sad to say they’ve come at me with ludicrous offers that I really can’t accept.”

92年的選秀是長人天下，一對狀元和榜眼，分別是Shaquille O’Neal和Alonzo Mourning，連打過夢幻隊的「學生王子」都只能排在第三位，之後還有Robert Horry和入樽王Harold Milner，都可算是星光熠熠。

結果在新人球季，Doug Christie只上陣23場常規賽，平均落場時間是14.4分鐘，平均數據是6.2分、2.2個籃板和2.3次助攻，平平無奇，只能當成吸收經驗。能夠被Jerry West看中，當然有過人之處；在生涯之初，Doug Christie以運動能力強和大膽的打法而出名；在湖人完整的陣容中，他只能扮演第二梯隊，但因為金球不少，所以已有不少fans，看以下的精華片段，就知道他的威力。

換轉在今日的NBA，Doug Christie會是非常值錢的3D球員，體能勁爆，防守出色，也有必需的三分波；所以Jerry West會爭取交易，就是希望他可以繼續領湖人Showtime。可以打2或3號位的他，在第二季被Randy Pfund安排打3號位，可是全不適應，略嫌單薄的他防守吃虧，也不慣太少觸球；結果在94年，當湖人選上打法相近的Eddie Jones後，Doug就被送到Pat Riley的紐約人，結束了在洛城的一季半歲月。得悉消息後，Doug自言幾乎崩潰，誰想到幾年後，Eddie Jones也因為Kobe長成，面被送離湖人？

“I broke down, to be honest with you,” Christie said. “Right at that point, before it happened, I started getting the gist of my life and what I wanted to do. But I understood his position too. [They] had to win now.”

去到紐約人之後，當時球隊已有足夠後衛，也容不下這初生之犢；在紐約人時代，Doug Christie最出名的可能是96年參加入樽大賽，雖然彈力十足，可是創意欠奉，最過癮是見到Patrick Ewing在場邊為他打氣。只見Doug不斷用腳踢起籃球，想撞板來過飛身入樽，可惜最後是幾多次也不成功，自然也贏不了冠軍。那一屆的冠軍是快艇的Brent Barry，簡單穿上熱身外套，就來個罰球線入樽，輕易稱王。

明星賽後，Doug Christie又再被送到速龍，也是他NBA生涯中，第一間「合作愉快」的球會。經過半季的適應，Doug Christie終於在96–97球季站穩正選，上陣時間更達38.6分鐘；當時Vince Carter還未來到，球隊第一主力是「太空飛鼠」Damon Stoudamire，平均每場有20.2分，之後有打法全能的Walt Williams，以及Marcus Camby，Doug也成為不可或缺的一員，平均每場有14.5分、5.3籃板和3.9次助攻，最難得是2.5次偷波，三分命中率也高達38.4%，以一個四年生來說，全面也攻守兼備。

速龍之後陸續有球員加入，但Doug Christie就一直扮演Mighty Mouse的護法角色；就算在98年選上VC後，Doug Christie的角色也一樣重要，數據也相若，只是因為接球較少，三分命中亦不斷下跌。而當Tracy McGrady和VC的羽翼長成，速龍更需要前場的支援，結果就把Doug送到帝王，交換undersize的大前鋒Corliss Williamson，這亦成了他生涯的轉捩點。

雖然不是打了太久，可是Doug Christie深受速龍球迷喜愛，甚至比「叛徒」Vince Carter更受歡迎；一方面是因為他每次落場都做好本份，付出120%，也因為他是年輕速龍的領袖，以身作則帶領球員。例如T-Mac，在生涯初段就效力速龍，也非常感激Doug的幫助，直言每晚和他 1on 1，學到不少。其實不止T-Mac，Jason Terry和Jamal Crawford等曾與他合作的球員，都讚不絕口，在人來人往的NBA，這絕非易事。

“I love Doug,” McGrady said. “I played Doug on one-on-one every day — we were just going at each other — and that’s how I was working on my one-on-one game and building my confidence up because I know he was a great defender, he was a hell of a defender.”

很多人以為，Doug Christie的防守是在紐約練成，其實由當初的彈力小子，到中後段的單防高手，主因是在速龍的歲月。因為有Darrell Walker這位曾助公牛贏過總冠軍的後衛，他非常注重防守，所以在速龍隊，總是貫輸防守為先的概念，也讓Doug改變了想法，明白要贏得比賽，防守遠比進攻重要。

“He was a defensive guy,” Christie said. “He would always put me on the best guy. At first, I was just trying to reach and go for steals. Then he started saying, ‘Play position defense. Make him make the tough shot.’ You know, educating me a little bit about the defense in the NBA.”

Darrell Walker一如Jerry West，對Doug的優異體能及一雙長臂非常欣賞，也看出他想打出更好防守，而非每場入20、30分就算。很多球員有極高天賦，可是未能遇上名師，結果在生涯之初沒有養成好習慣，很快就消失在NBA；Doug剛好相反，無論在湖人及速龍都學到了籃球的真締，也明白單靠天賦，很快就會用完，所以加強防守，也令他成為帝王諸子中，籃球壽命最長的一位。

“He really anticipates,” Walker said. “He had the desire to be a good defensive player.

“Night in, night out, it’s just effort. It’s not glamorous. You don’t get rewarded for that. You don’t get the big payday. But somebody has to do it if you’re going to win in basketball.”

95–96球季的公牛被譽為史上最強球隊，全季72勝10負，在總決賽輕鬆奪冠；連同季後賽，全季只輸了13場波，要從他們手上取下一勝，談何容易。可是當時戰績差勁的速龍，就在3月主場擊敗公牛，靠的，就是Doug Christie。這場波速龍以109:108險勝，Doug肩負防守Michael Jordan的重任，他自己攻入了13分，包括三射全中的三分，更重要是雖讓MJ攻入36分，但卻讓他最後一擊射失！當時的速龍教練Darrell Walker本想讓Alvin Roberson出手，但Alvin卻認為，Doug全場都做得不錯，不如就讓他把握這難得的機會。

“In the timeout, (then-assistant coach) Darrell Walker said, ‘OK, (veteran Raptors guard) Alvin (Robertson), you’re going to stick on him for the last shot,” Christie recalled earlier this week in an interview over the phone. “And Alvin kind of paused and looked like, ‘Hey, the young fella’s been doing a good job on him. Let him go.’ For me in many ways, because Alvin was such a great defender and a friend of Michael’s, it was a validation for me. At the same time, it was just one of those times where you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’

結果Doug Christie的防守，讓佐敦一直接不到波，在隊友射失、籃球彈到MJ手上，球證已吹完場；MJ最後出手雖然擦板命中，也已太遲。這次防守讓Doug得到更多注意，就連MJ也大為讚賞，賽後送上了簽名照片，算是非常肯定。有興趣的朋友，可在以下片段中聽聽當事人和另一位經常與MJ對抗的帝王名將Mitch Richmond怎麼說。

“When I played against him, and that was the 72-win year, I tried to be extremely physical with him,” Christie said. “One thing I always appreciated about Mike was he never cried. He would just handle his business. If you were physical, he was going to be physical.”

“I would try to force him off of his spot, make him shoot a jump shot — the point is, you’ve got to pick your poison,” Christie said. “If you let him get in the air, if you let him get to the basket, it’s pretty much a wrap. Not only will he get fouled, but he’ll finish.”
