Zero Fans and Followers
For me
I don't think I have fans or followers.
I have struggled with this terminology for a while.
A fan is someone who follows someone else fanatically, and I don't get fans. Any respect or adoration should not be aimed at me. I believe that I am here for a reason, and it’s not for admiration.
I am not sure what that reason is, but I am pretty sure that’s the deal.
A follower, depending on the platform, is someone who likes my work a bit. It's like getting a nod, passing in the hall. They acknowledge that you exist and don't try to run away from you.
It really takes very little to become a follower in most places. A push of a button at a place where you already are. If I were an ax murderer, one of my neighbors still might give me a friendly nod if we passed on the street.
It's my belief I am blessed to have a follower, but they are not following me. We were simply in the same place at the same time one day when I said something that resonated with them. So I got a head nod, and I am extremely grateful for it.
To go a step further, if someone decides to like me or my writing, even more, we might end up meeting, shaking hands.
So we have the two types of readers, the nodders and the hand shakers.
They are called different arbitrary names depending on which social media is describing them.
But I will henceforth call them my peeps and my buds.
My peeps nod at me and check out my writing when it comes out. They publicly admit to enjoying it and try to see more of it.
My buds meet me, shake my hand, and ask me to shoot them a copy when I publish a story.
My buds deserve and get a little extra from me.
But none of them are fans or followers of ME, just friends.
I am so grateful for them all. I am grateful to have been given the gift of being interesting from time to time.
Thanks for reading!
