Hey there, just go below if you want the pre-practice prep.

But if you’re here from the article, then you already know what this is.

This is a fun voice exercise that could be used by anyone who wants to practice expressing their identity through their emotions.

But this is primarily for everyone I know in the queer and trans community who is working hard to shift the sound of their voice so it evokes for themselves and others the perception of them they desire.

Which is in part their gender.

Now as for this exercise, we’ll be using the words “NO WAY” and only those words to express these different emotions.

The Twelve Stages of Stephenie’s Transition

FEELINGS ARE MY KRYPTONITE

Focus not just on the words you’re saying, but what emotion you communicate in how you say it. That is the space you need to inhabit when you’re thinking about modifying the gendered perception of how your voice sounds.

You cannot think of it as just the information of your gender. It is about the essence of who you are and how you communicate that essence through the sound of your voice. And that is something we all have to cultivate at some point. So don’t let the fact that you’re working on this make you think there’s something wrong with you.

This is completely normal. Completely healthy. So let’s get to it. Here’s my examples. You practice along with me if you want.

FINAL THOUGHTS

My bigger hope is that this daily practice helps a lot of us feel more comfortable expressing our authentic emotions and authentic selves. We have been speaking for most of our lives with a fake voice, fake mannerisms, either hiding our true voices or never cultivating them in the early ages in which we deserved to do so.

Once you get a feel for expressing a dynamic emotion, you’ll shift your understanding of your own voice and how you use it to express your gender. You’ll no longer speak merely for validation of your gender — you’ll speak to assert to others what you already know to be true.
