You’re Writing Your Medium Posts All Wrong — Here’s Why

I’m so, so excited to write this right now.

You have no idea.

(TRUST ME, I get to the goods soon — and for those who don’t know me, I have almost 20k Medium followers and am about to drop some knowledge bombs on you about this platform)

1️⃣ST OF ALL

— — — — — — —

I’m RETURNING to my old habit of writing a new story for Medium every single weekday.

I’m serious.

It’s going to be 🔥.

For those of you who follow me, you also know I JUST started a daily vlog as well over on YouTube.

I’m turning up the volume on content creation for Medium because, well, this is where it all started for me.

Because I have 19,800 followers and I want to get to 100,000.

Because I above all want to be a practitioner of my art and inspire others to create while I create.

Because I want to be the first person to make $20,000 in one month with the Medium Partner Program.

I SEE PEOPLE MAKING $9–$10K per month in your emails, Medium, and I’m coming for the heavyweight belt.

You alright with that?

2️⃣ND OF ALL

— — — — — — — —

Casey Neistat JUST announced he was starting a new daily vlog called 368 a few days ago.

It was so inspiring to see somebody with 450 times more followers than me decide to create something new every single day.

He doesn’t need to.

He has, like, 9 million subscribers on YouTube — and I’m not even counting anything else he’s on like Twitter or Instagram.

That inspired me, in part, to begin writing every day here on Medium as well.

3️⃣RD OF ALL

— — — — — — — —

My days have been ridiculous lately. Truly ridiculous.

My eyes are never not bloodshot. I’m never not working on something. But for some reason I find myself constantly looking forward to the next day with a night-before-christmas type of boyish joy.

I’m 💯 percent excited about my life and often times can’t even get to sleep because of it.

I hear a lot of people telling me to take breaks and all that sort of other stuff, but I guess that’s just not my M.O.

To be honest with you all, I’ve been disgusted with my writing lately.

I began writing on Medium to talk about my post-grad struggles and life lessons from traveling.

Now I whore most of my articles out talking about Medium itself. I mean, it’s definitely cool to do that because I legitimately help other people build their audience here (which is a great purpose to have), but I want to get back to posting meaningful shit more.

Shit that’s close to my heart.

By the way, you can insert a burn in the comments about how the headline of this article is “technically another one of those” Medium stories about Medium any time you want. 😉

Anyway, my soul is bursting at the seams with new life lessons to write about, so write about them I will at The Ascent, The Post-Grad Survival Guide, and The Mission. Maybe I’ll throw a post to The Startup every now and then?

4️⃣TH OF ALL

— — — — — — — —

My stories are going to be just that again..

STORIES.

I’m going to leave it all out there in ways you haven’t seen before. I want to be even more exposed than I already am (I’m sick of using the term “vulnerable”).

I want to create just to create, not to make money or fund my travels around the world.

Yes, I will definitely STILL help you build your audience, but about half of my stories now are just going to be straight up life lessons with little to no call-to-action at the end (besides maybe the call to subscribe to my YouTube channel).

Cool with that? Okay.

5️⃣TH OF ALL (This Is The Punchline)

— — — — — — — —

Have you ever seen a sub-headline on Medium designed like that 👆?

I don’t think you have.

If you have, direct me to the person who did it so I can congratulate them.

The other day I inserted a Google Form into my article and received, like, 400 responses. That’s ridiculous, people.

The punchline here is that there’s a surprising lack of creativity here on Medium. Creativity related to how we structure stories, headlines, and even how we “design” our articles.

I built my following here largely by mimicking how other writers did these things.

And to be honest their IS a formula, and it DOES work, and I’m not knocking anybody who lives and dies by this formula..

But nobody is doing anything to build on it.

What if we revolutionize the way articles are written in the first place? What if we create new words and lingo that the internet as a whole goes on to use? What if we start using the Medium tools that are given to us in ways the very creators of these tools never thought about before?

Now we’re talking.

Medium can get so boring because it’s honestly the same shit everywhere you look.

The other day I saw someone use a .gif as their cover image. It was glorious. In fact, the Mission does this a lot.

What about those writers that create actual art for their images? I’m looking at you Nate Miller and John P. Weiss.

These people boast numbers that are a step above everyone else’s because they’re doing something different, and I think it’s time I try to do something different with Medium.

What if I did a collaboration article with another writer where we go back — and — forth debating a particular topic/have a conversation in words right in front of you?

It would be like a Medium rap battle.

Any takers?

The whole fucking idea of a collab article in the first place is pretty bonkers, so.

From now on, Medium is going to be my canvas.

Let’s create. ACTUALLY create. Let’s ACTUALLY do something new with this damn platform, because we owe it to Medium to maximize its potential.

That’s why I’m telling you now that you’re writing your Medium posts all wrong. There’s so much more to the pie that I think we’re all missing, and I’ll lead this creative charge into the future by trying/testing things out right in front of you in real time on this awesome platform.

Let’s create.

Here’s my dumb call-to-action where I tell you to sub my YouTube channel. It’ll be fun, I promise. ;)
