You’re Under My Skin

Twisted Love for Those Closest To Us

Photo by Adrian Swancar on Unsplash

You’ve gotten under my skin so deeply I thought it might be love.

But I think it’s worn thin. Perhaps because I wore it too much.

But what if I do love you, where shall I begin?

Should I try to win your heart over… but what if I don’t win?

Perhaps it would be for the best if we agree to remain friends?

Though I can’t stand the thought of living without you, I don’t want it to end.

Maybe we could take things cautiously, with no expectations?

No, I don’t like working through such arbitrary limitations.

I think you ARE under my skin, and I can’t get you out.

Perhaps I am in love with you Though, I still have my doubts.

The last time I saw you was at that convention.

Remember in the restroom, you got my attention.

We’re so much alike. Don’t you feel the connection?

Let me touch you, to show you my affection.

Each time I walk away why must you disappear?

The only time we ever talk is in front of a mirror.

The inspiration for this piece is the ubiquitous self-help advice that we should love ourselves first before loving another. I heard that phrase again and it took me to a twisted place and this is what I came up with.

I was curious what other writers might do with this theme, twisted or not. So I’ve copied a few good ones here as an invitation to share their take on the topic of loving yourself.
