Summary

The web content discusses the inconsistent and often perplexing alphabetical organization of movies on Disney+, highlighting numerous examples where titles are misplaced, series are split up, and special characters are prioritized in an unconventional manner.

Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive critique of the Disney+ streaming service's "All Movies A-Z" category, pointing out that the alphabetization is riddled with errors and inconsistencies. It highlights that movies starting with numerals are not listed in layman's numerical order, series entries are scattered rather than grouped together, and special characters in titles are treated inconsistently. The author notes that this poor organization makes navigation difficult, especially for users with visual impairments who rely on screen readers, as Disney+ lacks text-based titling. The article also suggests that human oversight could significantly improve the service's accessibility and user experience.

Opinions

  • The author expresses frustration with Disney+'s alphabetical organization, implying it is haphazard and lacks logical order.
  • There is a clear disappointment in the service's failure to group movie series together, which is seen as a disservice to viewers.
  • The article criticizes the inconsistent treatment of special characters and spaces in titles, which leads to further disorganization.
  • The author points out the irony in Disney's meticulous control over cultural memory through copyright lobbying, yet their streaming service lacks attention to detail in something as fundamental as alphabetical sorting.
  • There is a suggestion that Disney+ is not accessible to individuals with low vision due to the reliance on images for title navigation.
  • The author humorously questions the logic behind the sorting algorithm, particularly when it comes to the placement of certain titles.
  • The article calls for Disney to implement a human touch in reviewing the sorting algorithm's output to enhance the user experience.
  • The author makes a tongue-in-cheek proposal for a future review on whether the alphabetical order of Star Wars movies on Disney+ could be considered the ultimate viewing order, further emphasizing the absurdity of the current situation.

You’re Not Crazy: Disney+ Movies Aren’t Actually Listed in Alphabetical Order

And we were bored enough to find out just how off they are

A special collaboration with the amazing Siarra Brielle Bazler

Image: Disney+

What is up with Disney’s alphabetization on their streaming service, anyway? Do they put all their brainpower into controlling our collective cultural memory through copyright lobbying and just don’t have enough time left to do a basic, alphabetized list?

I mean, I get it; some of their movies are somehow labeled as “Disney’s [Whatever]” and so they all just get sorted into the D section, but that doesn’t explain why pretty much every letter category starts over half way through.

Anyway, we were bored, so we sat down and wrote out every single movie on Disney+’s “All Movies A-Z” category, at least according to the Roku App (a cursory glance at Disney + in browser collaborates this pitiful display of organization). Mistakes have been starred. Line breaks have been inserted when the alphabetization just gets starts over for no reason.

Feel free to skim to your favorites, if you can find them in this shoddy alphabetization.

Numerals:

10 Things I Hate About You

101 Dalmations

101 Dalmations 2

102 Dalmations

*12 Dates of Christmas (The system isn’t smart enough to put numerals in layman’s order. Even Windows does that.)

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

A:

A Celebration of the Music from Disney/Pixar Coco

A Ring of Endless Light

A Tale of Two Critters (Yes, these first three films have been alphabetized by their article, “a,” rather than relevant, titular metadata)

The Adventures of Huck Finn

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

Aladdin

Alice in Wonderland

Aliens of the Deep

Almost Angels

America’s Heart & Soul

Amy

(Marvel Studios) Ant-Man (You’ll see why this is notated this way in this list later.)

Apollo: Missions to the Moon

Atlantis Rising

*Atlantis Milo’s Return (There’s no excuse here.)

(Marvel Studios) Avengers: Endgame

Adventures in Babysitting

Frankenweenie

Freaky Friday

Free Solo

Frozen

Full Court Miracle

Fun and Fancy Free

**Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Special

Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Holiday Magic (These two are bizarre because their title formats use the “Disney’s” marker, but they’re alphabetized without it, and then proceed to fail to actually be listed in alphabetical order relative to each other.)

First Kid

Frank and Ollie

Frankenweenie (I feel like I’ve seen this listed before….)

Freaky Friday (This deja vu is getting eerie)

Freaky Friday (Are you kidding me?)

Frenemies

Frozen II (Ah man - Disney split up one of their most popular recent animated films from its early-release sequel? What a shame.)

Fuzzbucket

G:

G-Force

*The Game Plan (Ok, so the alphabetization scheme clearly thinks all spaces and special characters should come before any letters at all. We’re making progress in deciphering it, people.)

Ice Age: The Great Eggscapade (When did Disney start owning these, anyway?)

The Incredible The Story of Dr. Pol (Or maybe The Incredible Dr. Pol: The Story of? We had some trouble with this one and Disney doesn’t provide text-based titles, just images of the posters and some word art. It really isn’t very accessible.)

*The Lion King (But then we have this. Why… is this last???)

Somehow, you made it to the end of this list. Even if that was by rapid scrolling with occasional skimming, we commend you.

So, what have we learned? A human touch can probably help Disney+ make their ordering system much better, whether that is making sure that they are consistent in labeling their metadata or by double checking what their sorting algorithm spits out. Series should either be categorized by their name or the series title. It shouldn’t just be a crap shoot. Also, Disney+ is not very accessible to low sighted individuals, given the service’s lack of text-based titling. The only way to view titles is by the (frankly tiny) pictures of the movie posters, or (the image of) the title design when you first select a film.

Get on it Disney!

Anyway, thanks for reading. Tune in next time for our in-depth review “Is Disney+’s Alphabetical Order of Star Wars Movies the Ultimate Viewing Order?”
