You’re 1/4 Black? Here’s a Black Card.

Everyone gets a black card.

I’ll never understand why some black people hand out black cards like Thanksgiving dinner.

“You get a black card! You get a black card!”

Ugh.

When scrolled through my Instagram feed today, this “black guy,” who is clearly white-passing (1/4 black at best), got into a heated argument with the commenters who speculated on his race.

We’ll call the white-passing “black guy” Dan. Dan claimed he was black in a post and he also sprinkled some Black Lives Matter performative activism to keep people distracted. But it didn’t work.

After doing some digging, I’ve found that Dan’s dad is a white Jew. His mother? Unknown. However, because of his super light skin tone, I would assume his mother is biracial at best.

I was disappointed when I saw black people in the comments defending Dan.

Why?

1/4 does NOT make someone black.

Heck, it took me YEARS to find out that Mariah Carey is 1/4 black. Let me repeat that again to get that through my head. Mariah Carey is 1/4 black. There we go.

I’ve been calling her a black woman for so long that I couldn’t fathom the thought of her escaping that identity.

Why do some black people defend white-passing “black people” online, claiming them as black?

Low self-esteem.

It’s Megan Markle syndrome all over again. Remember when black people claimed her as black even though she’s biracial? In the interview she and Harry did with Oprah, she claimed her baby was the first “royal baby of color.” Yet their child is straight-up white.

We must have higher self-esteem as a collective. We don’t need to pass out a black card to everyone that might have a pinch of blackness in their DNA. If you can’t tell whether or not someone is black upon looking at them, chances are they’re not black.

Let’s use that as the metric, shall we?

Black people have too much culture, accomplishments, and contributions to the world to give out black cards to anyone who walks past the cookout. Black cards are sacred and should only be given to umm…black people.
