Let me start this article by asking you a very simple question. How do you measure success?

Do you measure it by how much money you can make in an hour, a week, a month, a year, a lifetime?

Do you measure it by how many members of the same or opposite sex you can seduce in a night?

What about accolades, prizes, titles, admiration, popularity, acquisitions like property, material goods such as cars and jewellery, or stocks and shares, companies and businesses?

Do you feel inadequate if you cannot attain any of the above?

Perhaps if do feel wanting you are setting the bar too high for yourself.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I, like a great many others, used to be that way too.

And the problem with that is it can be unhealthy in the extreme. You get anxious, stressed out and ill. You can develop unhealthy dysfunctional relationships with your dearest and nearest. Ultimately it can ruin your life and even kill you.

If you want to be successful, and let’s face it we all do, and it’s not working out for you in any of the ways described above……Why don’t we simply re-define what it means to be successful?

How about being successful as a human being? Or how about we define our success in terms of what we have achieved, how much we have grown, in getting from where we were to were we are? I think this is where we can really begin to feel successful.

If I were to measure my success in life according to any of the above criteria, the money, property, prizes, titles etc then yes I have done ok, though much of it has now gone. And what I am left with is……me. That’s it, me, who and what I am, period.

The things that are left cannot be stripped away from me never. My life experiences, my informal and formal learning, my personal development and growth as a human being. These are all deeply embedded in my psyche and they cannot be removed from me by any individual, corporation or government. Now that is what I call success.

Of course, I do look for success as a writer, for example. And I am very happy to declare that I have it. I don’t have it because it makes me lots of money (which at the moment it doesn’t). I don’t have it because I have a growing following (which I have).

I have success as a writer because it is something I adore doing and I do, in my humble opinion, do it reasonably well. That, for me at least, is success. And this may come as a surprise for you, I have not lowered the bar, on the contrary, I have raised the bar. That is because I place a much higher value on personal development, growth and satisfaction than I do on things.

If you use people and value things you have got it all arse about face. You have to value people and use things. When you can do that then you will become successful.

It is not only me who gets it neither. Geetika Sethi once told me, “ Stay blessed.” I knew exactly what she meant. Henery X (long) tells me frequently “ Enjoy the success you are having.” By this, I can see Henery gets it too, as indeed do a great many others.

In conclusion, try to re-define what success means rather than constantly trying to attain what you previously thought or believed success meant to you.

Stop chasing the ace and accept that YOU are the ace. And the more you think about it, the success you were constantly chasing, well guess what, you already had it all along, you just didn’t realise it. Now is the time to wake up to what a success you are. How does that feel champ?

At the beginning of this piece, I made an implicit promise of success. That was not a false promise. I do genuinely believe that I have delivered. It is up to you to pick up that ball and run with it and enjoy being the success that you already are. If you fail to run with it, that’s because you are happy to continue as you were, keeping your eyes wide shut. It’s up to you. Remember one thing, if you do run with this mindset you are setting yourself up to succeed every single day of your life. If you fail to see the sense of it, then you are potentially setting yourself up to fail. Success or failure, I know which one I can live with and have a happy and fulfilling life.

And another thing. All self-improvement begins at re-evaluation. To re-evaluate yourself and your place in the world, to re-evaluate the meaning of success and failure, that is surely an exercise well worth a few moments of anybodies time and a little mental energy. At least give it a try.

And after you have seen for yourself how transforming this new mindset can be, spread the word to others so that they too can rejoice in being successful. Illuminate the idea for all the world to see and imagine what a brilliant light will shine all around the world. Imagine illuminating all the truly wonderful and inspirational stories of success there are out there.
