Your Progress May Not Always Be a Straight Line
The true recipe for achieving your goals and how to manage the twists and turns of your journey

I personally don't like the saying “Two steps forward, one step back” because it usually feels like a discouraging truth, a reminder that progress is fickle and setbacks inevitable.
I would rather prefer to reframe this saying to see it not as a limitation, but as a realistic portrayal of the human journey.
The truth is that progress rarely happens in a straight line. Sometimes there will be moments of exhilarating leaps forward, followed by inevitable stumbles and plateaus. This isn’t a sign of failure; it’s simply the natural rhythm of growth.
Sometimes to make progress, you have to pull backwards like a slingshot. You may be pulled backwards for some time, but you’re really about to be shot flying forward.
Imagine learning to walk as a child. It’s a series of wobbly steps, occasional falls, and moments of joyous, albeit unsteady, progress.
We don’t berate ourselves for falling; we celebrate each shaky step as a victory. The same principle applies to any endeavour, whether it’s mastering a new skill, pursuing a dream, or navigating the complexities of life.
Every setback, every misstep, holds valuable lessons. It provides an opportunity to reassess, recalibrate, and emerge stronger. Did you overestimate your capabilities? Refine your strategy. Did you encounter an unforeseen obstacle? Adapt your approach. Every challenge, overcome or not, shapes our resilience and hones our problem-solving skills.
Adopt what I call the Water Principle. When water encounters an obstacle, it does not give up or turn back. Instead, it adjusts its course and finds a way around, over, or through the obstruction.
So, how do we deal with those inevitable setbacks?
- Acknowledge, Don’t Dwell: Acknowledge the setback, but don’t let it define you. Allow yourself to feel the frustration, but don’t get stuck in a cycle of negativity.
- Seek the Lesson: Look for the learning opportunity within the setback. What went wrong? What could you have done differently? How can you use this experience to be better prepared for the next challenge?
- Don’t wait for the grand finale to celebrate. Acknowledge and celebrate every small step forward, every conquered obstacle. These moments of self-appreciation fuel your motivation and keep you moving forward.
- Progress is a journey. Enjoy the process, the challenges, and the unexpected detours. It’s in the overcoming that we truly grow.
Whenever you stumble, don’t see it as a regression. See it as a necessary bend in the road, a chance to learn and adapt.
Accept the two steps forward, one step back mentality whenever it happens to you, for it is ultimately these kinds of journeys that lead us to our greatest destinations.
