Your Medium Fans Will Find You
So quit writing for a certain reader.
Are you looking for fans? Stop.
When I first began writing on Medium over a month ago, I was like any other rookie to the site. I learned everything I could and dove into the waters with a gleam of hope and uncertainty. And I just kept swimming.
One of the lessons new writers learn, or hopefully learn, is that writers should write about their niche if they want to have a great following. I’ve also read where writers should write whatever they want.
Lately, I’ve been leaning toward more the latter.
Though my niche is mostly about writing, I’ve also written a number of other stories, like success, life, college and even poems and short stories. I write whatever I want to because Medium has let me do so.
And fans have found me.
Your Fans Will Find You
Early on, I thought I should be writing what people want to read.
There’s some truth to that in a sense, but anyone on Medium should write about what they please no matter what. And the fans will come to you.
When you’re out there trying to be the perfect writer in the niche people want to read, it takes you away from writing what you truly want to write. Finding an audience wears you down.
So let them come to you.
It’s easy and difficult a the same time. If you are:
- Genuine
- Vulnerable
- Intelligent
- Passionate
Then you should have no problem gaining an audience. If you have all of these qualities and you attach them to great writing, then you’re well on your way to success on Medium.
Stephen King Does It
One of the many things I admire about Stephen King is the fact he hasn’t searched for an audience. They have found him.
Sure, he mostly writes horror novels. But he’s also written mysteries, science fiction, fantasy and many other genres.
He writes what he wants and he lets his audience find him.
That is the kind of freedom a writer should have: being able to write what you want and letting you audience come and find you.
If you stay consistent with your great writing, then there’s no doubt you will be successful on Medium.
It’s helped me thus far. And I guarantee it will help you too.
